NEC WOMEN’S LACROSSE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Francesca Tortora, Le Moyne
Attack, Graduate Student, Syracuse, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse (Stony Brook)
Tortora exploded for nine points last week to help lead Le Moyne to a split record that included a league-opening win over Stonehill, last year’s NEC Tournament runner-up. Getting her week going with a three-point outing against Canisius on Wednesday after she found the back of the net twice and tacked on an assist, Tortora went off for a season-best six points to steer the Dolphins to a come-from-behind victory against the Skyhawks. Scoring three times for her third hat trick of the year, Tortora, who got the Dolphins on the scoreboard with 68 seconds left in the first quarter, broke a 9-9 draw and sealed the 11-9 comeback win by delivering the game-winning goal with 2:02 left in the fourth. The local product from Syracuse leads the Dolphins with nine assists while her 24 goals and 15 points are good for second and third on the team, respectively. With Tortora’s NEC Player of the Week award, Le Moyne has claimed the honor in four of five weeks this season.
NEC WOMEN’S LACROSSE DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Sydney Mulroony, Wagner
Midfield, Sophomore, Rockaway, NJ/Morris Hills
Mulroony became the first Seahawk this season to garner recognition from the league with this week’s NEC Defensive Player of the Week award. The sophomore midfielder had a stellar all-around week for Wagner, combining for three points, eight ground balls, five caused turnovers and three draw controls in a pair of outings. Contributing two draw controls, one ground ball and a caused turnover in Wednesday’s midweek tilt against UAlbany, Mulroony was stellar in her team’s NEC opener, an 18-3 triumph over visiting Delaware State on Saturday. The Rockaway, NJ native recorded career-best numbers in nearly every category in the victory after canning two goals, three points, seven ground balls and four caused turnovers. On the season, Mulroony, who has registered 10 points to rank second on the team, is also second among fellow Seahawks in caused turnovers (7), while her 15 ground balls are a team-best mark.
NEC WOMEN’S LACROSSE ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Mia Layne, FDU
Attack, Freshman, Davie, FL/St. Thomas Aquinas
Layne extended her multiple-goal streak to three games this past week after she netted a pair of goals against both Presbyterian and Central Connecticut. Racking up five points in those contests after adding an assist against the Blue Hose, the Sunshine State product helped the Knights extend their program-best win streak to three and four games with respective 11-9 and 16-5 victories. With 2:21 remaining in regulation on Tuesday against Presbyterian, Layne delivered FDU’s final goal of the game to provide her team with a two-point cushion heading down the final stretch. Later in the week in her team’s NEC opener against Central Connecticut, the first-year attacker contributed one marker to a commanding Knights’ 11-0 run that made it a 12-1 advantage with 7:17 to go in the third. Layne, who ranks sixth on the squad with 10 points, is the first FDU player this season to garner NEC Rookie of the Week honors.
