Choice Hotels/NEC Player of the Week
Jamal Olasewere, LIU Brooklyn
6-7, 215lbs
Jr., F, Silver Spring, MD/Springbrook
Olasewere averaged 27.0 points and 11.5 rebounds in helping LIU Brooklyn to a pair of NEC road victories and earn this week’s Choice Hotels/NEC Player of the Week award. He becomes the second Blackbird in as many weeks to take home the honor, after helping them improve to 4-0 in league play and stretch their NEC winning streak to 14 games dating back to last season. Against Sacred Heart last Thursday, the 6-7 forward went off for a season-high 29 points in an 87-81 victory. He also added 12 boards, four steals and two blocks. Just two days later, Olasewere stretched his double-double streak to three games when he netted 25 points and came down with 11 rebounds in a 79-75 victory at Quinnipiac. The Silver Spring, MD native is the eighth-leading scorer in the NEC at 15.8 points per game and also ranks fifth in rebounding with 7.4 per contest. Olasewere is just 54 points shy of 1,000 for his career.
Choice Hotels/NEC Rookie of the Week
Kyle Vinales, Central Connecticut
6-1, 180lbs
Fr., G, Detroit, MI/Phelps School
Vinales continued his torrid scoring streak last week with a combined 45-point effort in a pair of wins, including a 68-53 victory over then-first-place Robert Morris at home. The six-time Choice Hotels/NEC Rookie of the Week winner averaged 22.5 points and 3.5 assists for the week. He did most of his damage in a win over Saint Francis (PA), dropping 27 points, including 20 in the first half, to guide the Blue Devils to a 69-58 decision over the Red Flash. He then reeled off 18 and dished for five assists in the win over the Colonials to boost his season average to 19.5 points per game, ranking him second in the league behind teammate and reigning NEC Player of the Year Ken Horton (21.0). Vinales is also the second-leading freshman scorer in the nation this season.
AROUND THE LEAGUE
THE STREAK GOES ON FOR LIU BROOKLYN: With victories over Sacred Heart (87-81) and Quinnipiac (79-75) last week, newly renamed LIU Brooklyn has now won 14 consecutive NEC regular season games dating back to last season, six shy of the NEC record established by Central Connecticut State from 2001-03. Including the postseason, the Blackbirds have taken down 17 straight league opponents. LIU Brooklyn last fell to a league rival on January 22, 2011 when Saint Francis (PA) beat the Blackbirds, 86-71, in Loretto, which itself snapped a six-game conference win streak for LIU. In total, the Blackbirds are 20-1 in their last 21 NEC regular season games.
CCSU, LIU BROOKLYN LAST REMAINING UNBEATEN: Four games in and we’re down to two unbeaten teams in league play. Central Connecticut is off to its first 4-0 start since 1999-00. That season, the Blue Devils finished 15-3 in NEC play en-route to their first conference championship. Defending NEC champion LIU Brooklyn is at 4-0 for the first time since 2009-10 when the Blackbirds won their first five league games and finished the year 11-7 against conference opposition. Robert Morris, St. Francis (NY) and Wagner are all one game back with 3-1 records.
RIVERS PROVIDES SPARK FOR SOARING SEAHAWKS: With a pair of road wins last week, Wagner is now off to its finest start since the 1968-1969 season when the Seahawks also opened the year with a 12-3 mark. Wagner has won five straight games with the spark coming from sophomore guard Latif Rivers (Elizabeth, NJ/Avon Old Farms (CT)). Rivers, who averaged 23.5 ppg and shot 60.0 percent from the field last week against Monmouth and Fairleigh Dickinson, has contributed 20.6 ppg over the course of the streak. During that time, he is shooting 54.1 percent (33-61) from the floor, 47.2 percent (17-36) from long range and 95.2 percent (20-21) from the line while pacing the team in scoring in four of those contests.
ST. FRANCIS (NY)’S STEFAN PERUNICIC REACHES 1,000-POINT MARK IN STYLE: St. Francis (NY) senior forward Stefan Perunicic (Belgrade, Serbia/Srednja Turisticka Skola) not only reached the 1,000-point mark for his career last Thursday, but did it in style, draining a pair of key buckets down the stretch to lead the Terriers to a come-from-behind 73-72 win over Quinnipiac in Brooklyn Heights. Needing 16 to hit the milestone, Perunicic sank a three-pointer with 2:53 on the clock to crack 1,000 points. The trifecta pulled the Terriers to within 70-65. Down two points in the waning moments, Perunicic cut back door, took a feed from junior forward Akeem Johnson (Brooklyn, NY/Susan S. McKinney) and converted a conventional three-point play with five seconds on the clock for the win. Perunicic became the 27th player in Terrier history to join the 1,000-point club and enters play this week with 1,026 points.
There are 175 players in NEC history who have reached the 1,000-point plateau since the league began sponsoring basketball in 1981. CCSU senior forward Ken Horton (Ossining, NY/Ossining) is the leading active scorer with 1,708 points. Quinnipiac senior guard James Johnson (Brooklyn, NY/Bishop Loughlin) is next with 1,410 and CCSU senior guard Robby Ptacek (Bayport, NY/Blue Point) has accumulated 1,293 points. This year, Sacred Heart junior guard Shane Gibson (Killingly, CT/Killingly) (1,089) and Wagner senior guard Tyler Murray (Toronto, Ontario/Eastern Commerce) (1,027) have also made it to 1,000 points.
The next line of players closing in on 1,000 this season include LIU Brooklyn junior forward Julian Boyd (San Antonio, TX/William H. Taft) (989), Wagner senior guard Chris Martin (Sicklerville, NJ/Winslow Township (Apex Academies)) (940), LIU Brooklyn junior forward Jamal Olasewere (Silver Spring, MD/Springbrook) (946) and Robert Morris junior guard Velton Jones (Philadelphia, PA/Northeast Catholic) (927).
CCSU’S VINALES IN ELITE COMPANY: Since we are about halfway into the 2011-12 season, it seems like to a good time to measure the impact of CCSU freshman guard Kyle Vinales (Detroit, MI/Phelps School), whose scoring exploits have taken the league by storm and place him in the company of some of the NEC’s top freshman in recent years (see chart below). Vinales, now a six-time Choice Hotels NEC Rookie of the Week with his latest honor, is the second-leading scorer in the league at 19.5 ppg and ranks second in the NEC with 2.9 three-pointers per contest. He is also second in the nation in scoring among freshman players, trailing only Niagara’s Juan’ya Green (19.6 ppg).
Vinales has posted seven games of 24+ points on the year and ranks in the NEC top-10 in three-point percentage (fifth, .406), free throw percentage (seventh, .791) and steals (tenth, 1.21). If Vinales were to maintain his scoring average, he would rank as the highest freshman NEC point producer since Darshan Luckey averaged 21.6 ppg to lead the league in 2002-03.

ROBERT MORRIS, WAGNER IN MID-MAJOR POLL: Robert Morris and Wagner continue to represent the NEC in the College Insider Mid-Major Top-25 poll. In the January 2nd edition, the Colonials ranked 24th with Wagner one spot behind in the 25th spot. RMU has been ranked three straight weeks, while Wagner has been recognized the last two polls. The NEC is one of only seven conferences to have at least two teams ranked.
WAGNER RECEIVES VOTE IN AP POLL: For the third week in a row, Wagner received a single vote in the Associated Press (AP) poll announced on January 9. LIU Brooklyn was the last NEC team prior to Wagner to earn votes in the AP rankings, twice claiming a single vote in late February and mid-March of the 2010-11 season.
NEC’S RPI LEADERS: The NEC currently sports a pair of teams ranked in the top-100 in the RPI. Wagner is currently 69th, while Robert Morris ranks 80th. LIU Brooklyn moved up 18 spots last week and is now approaching the top-100 at #113.
COLONIALS SCORE YET ANOTHER MARQUEE ROAD WIN: Robert Morris had racked up some impressive non-conference road wins in November and December, knocking off La Salle, Duquesne and James Madison, but their best victory may have been last Monday’s 70-67 conquest of Ohio University in Athens. The Bobcats had received 28 votes in the AP Top-25 poll earlier in the day, good for 27th in the country. Ohio was also ranked fifth in the CollegeInsider Mid-Major poll and entered the game with an RPI in the low 30s. Junior guard Velton Jones (Philadelphia, PA/Northeast Catholic) led the way with 17 points and six assists as the Colonials snapped Ohio’s nine-game win streak and handed the Bobcats their first home setback of the season.
WAGNER, ROBERT MORRIS MATCH NEC RECORD: With its thrilling win over an Ohio University team ranked 27th in the AP poll last Monday, Robert Morris matched the NEC single-season mark with its ninth non-conference victory of the year. Wagner also won nine non-league outings in 2011-12 to join a select list of teams who have accomplished the feat. Below are the NEC teams that reached nine non-conference wins (sorted by winning percentage) in the history of the league.
1. Wagner 9-2 .818 2011-12
2. Monmouth 9-3 .750 1991-92
3. Robert Morris 9-4 .692 2011-12
4. Robert Morris 9-5 .643 2007-08
Saint Francis (PA) 9-5 .643 1990-91
NEC-TV TRIFECTA: NEC-TV kicks into high gear over the next several weeks with three consecutive Game of the Year candidates on tap. On January 21, the NEC goes national as ESPNU invades the Spiro Center for a matchup between red-hot Wagner and defending champion LIU Brooklyn. The two teams met on December 1 in Brooklyn with the Blackbirds coming away with a 78-73 victory. Tipoff is at 7:00 pm with Adam Amin and Brooke Weisbrod in the booth. Five days later on January 26 we get a rematch of the classic 2011 NEC title game that saw LIU edge Robert Morris, 85-82, in overtime. The Colonials will attempt to exact some revenge on their home court in the only meeting between the two teams this season. Tip is at 7:00 pm and Dave Popkin (play-by-play), Joe DeSantis (color) and Paul Dottino (sideline) have the call. February 2nd brings yet another battle of NEC behemoths with Robert Morris visiting Wagner for a 7:00 pm start. Popkin (play-by-play), Tim Capstraw (color) and Dottino (sideline) comprise the announce crew. This too will be the only matchup between the Colonials and Seahawks in 2011-12.
GAME OF THE WEEK: Circle Thursday on your calendar for the latest installment of the Quinnipiac-Robert Morris rivalry. QU will be looking to even the score after the Colonials knocked the Bobcats out of the NEC playoffs in each of the last three years. The last two postseason meetings between the programs have been two-point classics, with RMU winning the 2010 NEC title game, 52-50, before ousting the Bobcats in the semifinals of the 2011 tourney, 64-62. Tipoff is at 7:00 pm in Moon Township. On February 25th, the two teams will meet in Hamden in a game to air on ESPNU.
TERRIERS OFF AND RUNNING (AND SHOOTING): An incredible shooting performance propelled St. Francis (NY) to a 99-84 win at Sacred Heart on Saturday and gave the Terriers their first 3-1 start in NEC play since the 2001-02 season. The Terriers drained an NEC single-game season-high 15 treys against the Pioneers and finished 15-27 (.556) from beyond the arc. St. Francis also shot a season-best 58.2 percent overall and were 20-22 (.909) from the free-throw line, also a season-high. Sophomore guard Ben Mockford (Shoreham-by-Sea, England/Oak Hill Academy (VA)) was unconscious from long range, sinking a career and NEC single-game season-best eight three-pointers to finish with a personal-best 28 points. Mockford now leads the NEC with 3.2 triples per game.
ON THE BOARDS WITH ST. FRANCIS (NY): In its 73-72 win on Thursday, St. Francis (NY) became only the second team this year to outrebound Quinnipiac, one of the nation’s top teams on the glass. The Terriers enjoyed a slight 39-38 edge on the boards and oddly enough, were led by 6’0” guard Justin Newton (Queens, NY/Poly Prep County Day), who snared eight caroms.
HISTORIC QU BOARD WORK: Quinnipiac turned things right around on the glass two days later, pulling down an unheard of 61 rebounds in Saturday’s 79-75 setback to LIU Brooklyn. The 61 rebounds – which included 27 on the offensive glass – were the most by an NEC team since Sacred Heart established a league record with 66 in a 133-130 overtime win over Fairleigh Dickinson on December 1, 2001. QU’s 61 boards were the highest total in a regulation NEC game since the league started tracking such figures in 1997-98.
Quinnipiac ranks fourth in the nation in rebound margin at +11.6 per game, trailing only Pittsburgh (+13.3), North Carolina (+11.7) and Marshall (+11.7). The Bobcats feature NEC leader Ike Azotam (Boston, MA/John D. O’Bryant (Marianapolis Prep)), a sophomore forward who averages 10.5 per game, and Ousmane Drame (Boston, MA/New Mission (Marianapolis Prep)), a 6’9” forward who ranks 10th in the conference and second among freshman with 6.5 per outing.
(DOUBLE) DOUBLE-DOUBLE MACHINE AT LIU: LIU Brooklyn has had two players record double-doubles in the same game in each of the last four contests. In an 87-81 win at Sacred Heart on Thursday, NEC Player of the Week Jamal Olasewere (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook), a junior forward, led all players with a season-high 29 points to go along with 12 rebounds while classmate Julian Boyd (San Antonio, Texas/William H. Taft) registered his fourth straight double-double with 12 points and 12 boards. At Quinnipiac on Saturday, Olasewere led all players with 25 points and 11 off the glass while sophomore guard Jason Brickman (San Antonio, Texas/Clark) tallied his second double-double of the year with 12 points and 10 assists. Olasewere has posted double-doubles in three straight games and five overall this season.
MORE DOUBLE-DOUBLE TALK: Speaking of double-doubles, the NEC leader in the category is Quinnipiac sophomore forward Ike Azotam (Boston, MA/John D. O’Bryant (Marianapolis Prep)), who has nine this season. The Bobcats have had at least one player record a double-double in 11-of-15 games on the year.
The NEC’s active double-doubles leader is CCSU senior forward Ken Horton (Ossining, NY/Ossining) with 24. Right behind is LIU Brooklyn junior forward Julian Boyd (San Antoinio, TX/William H. Taft) who has amassed 23 in his career.
CCSU’S KEN HORTON ENTERS TOP-20 ON NEC ALL-TIME SCORING LIST: Central Connecticut State senior forward Ken Horton (Ossining, NY/Ossining) continued to soar up the NEC career scoring list, jumping seven spots last week to move into 20th place with 1,708 points. Only the third player in CCSU history to reach 1,700 points, he is 27 shy of passing Damian Johnson (1,734) to become the school’s all-time scoring leader.

TERRIERS’ PERUNICIC CLIMBING NEC THREE-POINT CHART: St. Francis (NY) senior forward Stefan Perunicic (Belgrade, Serbia/Srednja Turisticka Skola) reached one career milestone last Thursday when he scored his 1,000th career point, but there appears to be another even more impressive one on the horizon. By week’s end, Perunicic had lifted his career three-point total to 247, tops among active NEC players, second in St. Francis history and tied for 13th on the league’s all-time list with former Saint Francis (PA) sharpshooter John Hilvert. He needs 18 more trifectas to move into the NEC top-10 and 48 more to surpass the Terrier career mark of 294 set by Angel Santana from 1996-00.

LIU BROOKLYN & NEW AGE NUMBERS: Similar to last year, LIU Brooklyn’s up-tempo, attacking style places them near the top of the nation in a number of team possession-based statistics. The Blackbirds, who lead the NEC in scoring at 77.8 ppg, currently rank sixth in the country with 77.1 possessions per 40 minutes. LIU is also sixth in Division I in free throw production (.348), which is an indication of a team’s ability to generate production from the line (Formula: FTM/FGA), and 12th in free throw rate (.229), which is the number of points scored from the free throw line, per possessions used (Formula: FTM/(FGA + TO + (0.44 x FTA)) - for more on free throw rate, see this article: http://media.nba.com/celtics/stats/inside-the-numbers/numbers010307-free-throws.html).
Similarly, LIU has gone to the line an average of 27.9 times per game, best in the NEC and third in the nation behind New Mexico State (35.3) and Duke (28.2).
NATION’S BEST: CCSU’S PTACEK NEAR-PERFECT FROM LINE: A host of NEC players rank among national leaders in various statistical categories, including CCSU senior guard Robby Ptacek (Bay Shore, NY/Blue Point), who is fourth in the country in free throw shooting at 92.3 percent.

MOUNTING DEFENSIVE PRESSURE: When Mount St. Mary’s went on the road to beat Fairleigh Dickinson, 66-45, on Saturday, it represented the third time in the last five games the Mount has held its opponent to 45 points or less. The last time an NEC team enjoyed such a prolific defensive stretch was when Central Connecticut yielded 44, 67, 34 and 48 points over a four-game period from January 28 – February 6, 2010. The Mountaineers are allowing 65.9 ppg on the year, third-best in the NEC. The defense has been even better over the past five games as the Mount has held opponents to 54.0 ppg over that span. The opposition is shooting just 37.4 percent overall and 16.4 percent (12-73) from three-point range in those outings.
COLONIAL DEFENSIVE STAND: Robert Morris has allowed an average of 59.4 points over the last 11 games, while holding opponents to a shooting percentage of 39.9 percent. In five of those games, the Colonials have yielded 56 or fewer points and no more than 68 in a single game. RMU leads the NEC in scoring defense (60.6 ppg) and field goal percentage defense (.406).
MU’S STEELE WELCOMES 2012: Super quick Monmouth junior guard Jesse Steele (Milford, NJ/Oak Hill Academy (Army)) has rung in the new year with a trio of terrific performances. On New Year’s Day, he registered 17 points and a career-high nine assists in a nationally televised game at North Carolina. With the resumption of league play last week, Steele scored nine points and added eight more assists in a 73-59 win over Mount St. Mary’s, then torched Wagner for 20 points and seven assists in an 89-79 setback. The Milford, NJ native leads the Hawks with 11.9 ppg, 3.9 apg, 29 three-pointers and 82.1 percent shooting from the line. He ranks sixth in the NEC in free throw accuracy and seventh in assists.
BULLDOGS BACK IN WIN COLUMN: Bryant’s 59-56 win over Saint Francis (PA) on Saturday snapped a 12-game losing streak and six-game NEC losing skid dating back to last season. The win also ended a five-game home losing stretch, also dating back to 2010-11. Keying the win for Bryant was sophomore forward Alex Francis (Harlem, NY/Holderness Prep (NH)), who recorded his fifth 20+ point outing of the year with a game-high 23 on the afternoon.
CCSU’S HORTON LEADS 20/30 PACK: In the “stellar games” category, no NEC player is even close to Central Connecticut senior forward Ken Horton (Ossining, NY/Ossining). Horton has racked up 40 games of 20+ points over the course of his career, nearly double that of his next closest competitors in the NEC, Sacred Heart’s Shane Gibson (Killingly, CT/Killingly) and teammate Robby Ptacek (Bay Shore, NY/Blue Point), who have 22 apiece. He has also tallied eight games of 30+ points, also a league-leading mark and six more than any other NEC player. This season alone, Horton has put up three 30-point outings.
ODD STAT OF THE WEEK: Sacred Heart has shot 50.0 percent or better six times this season but is just 2-4 in those games.
DID YOU KNOW?: Fairleigh Dickinson is off to its first 0-4 start in NEC play in school history.
