So., F, Boston, MA/O’Bryant/Marianapolis Prep
Azotam averaged 16 points and 16 rebounds as he helped the Quinnipiac Bobcats to a 2-0 week with victories over Yale and Navy. The Boston, MA native matched a career-high with 17 points and set a new career-high with 18 boards, including nine on the offensive end, as the Bobcats defeated the Bulldogs, 66-62, last Tuesday. Against Navy on Saturday, he poured in 15 points to go along with 14 rebounds. Overall, he shot 64.7 percent (11-of-17) from the floor. Choice Hotels/NEC Rookie of the Week
Kyle Vinales, Central Connecticut State
6-4, 180lbs
Fr., G, Famington Hill, MI/Phelps School
Vinales is showing no freshman jitters in his first season as a Central Connecticut State Blue Devil, claiming his second straight Choice Hotles/NEC Rookie of the Week honor. In just his second game, the Farmington Hills, MI product scored a nation-high 39 points in a 102-93 overtime setback to Niagara last Monday. He scored 29 of his points before halftime, including 16 in the first six and a half minutes. It was the most points by a collegiate player this season, and it put him in an exclusive club, as he became the eighth player since 2005-06 to average 1.50 points per minute while scoring at least 30 against a Division I opponent. On Saturday against Army, Vinales scored just three points, but posted a team-high seven assists and added four rebounds as the Blue Devils topped Black Knights at home, 67-51. Vinales currently leads the NEC in scoring at 22.0 points per game, and ranks third in made three-pointers (3.0/game) and fifth in three-point percentage (.563).
AROUND THE LEAGUE
CCSU SHARPSHOOTER VINALES IN RARE COMPANY: Talk about making an immediate impact. Since the start of the 2005-06 season, CCSU freshman guard and Choice Hotels/NEC Rookie of the Week Kyle Vinales (Farmington Hill, MI/Phelps School) is one of just eight players nationwide to average at least 1.5 points per minute while scoring at least 30 points against a Division I opponent. Playing in just the second game of his collegiate career at Niagara last Monday, Vinales scored 19 points in the first six minutes, had 29 by intermission and finished with an NCAA single-game season-high 39 points in just 26 minutes of play. In that game, he hit 15-23 shots from the floor, including 6-8 from three-point range, but fouled out with 7:45 remaining in the contest. The 15 field goals are also the top single-game mark in the nation this season. Vinales, a Michigan native, is the first to accomplish the 1.5 ppm feat since Arkansas guard Rotnei Clarke dropped 51 points in a 34-minute stint against Alcorn State on November 13, 2009. Others do so over the last seven seasons include current NBA stars Stephen Curry and Michael Beasley.
PLAYERS WITH 1.5 POINTS PER MINUTE (MIN. 30 POINTS) IN A GAME SINCE 2005-06
Kyle Vinales (CCSU) - 39 points in 26 minutes vs. Niagara (11/14/11) - 1.50 ppm
Rotnei Clarke (Arkansas) - 51 points in 34 minutes vs. Alcorn State (11/13/09) - 1.50 ppm
Stephen Curry (Davidson) - 43 points in 27 minutes vs. Appalachian State (3/7/09) - 1.59 ppm
Michale Beasley (Kansas Sate) - 33 points in 22 minutes vs. Iowa State (1/26/08) - 1.50 ppm
Michael Beasley (Kansas State) - 40 points in 23 minutes vs. Winstom Salem State (12/22/07) - 1.74 ppm
JaJuan Smith (Tennessee) - 32 points in 19 minutes vs. Middle Tennessee State (11/20/07) - 1.68 ppm
Brian Hodges (UMBC) - 36 points in 20 minutes vs. Morgan State (11/27/06) - 1.80 ppm
Rashad Anderson (UConn) - 33 points in 22 minutes vs. Morehead State (12/23/05) - 1.50 ppm
LIU CAPTURES SPRINGFIELD BRACKET TITLE AT HALL OF FAME TIPOFF TOURNEY: Following an 0-3 start that included road losses to Hofstra, Old Dominion and Penn State - teams that went a combined 67-31 a year ago - defending NEC champion and preseason favorite Long Island turned things around in the second half of the Hall of Fame Tipoff Tournament at the Mohegan Sun Arena over the weekend. The Blackbirds captured the Spring Bracket championship by beating Radford, 81-59, and Vermont, 80-75. Junior forward Julian Boyd (San Antonio, TX/William H. Taft) registered a pair of double-doubles in the two wins, and averaged 14.0 points and 11.0 rebounds. LIU is up for a major test in its next contest, a road outing at Iona. The Gaels, predicted to finish second in the MAAC, are coming off an 89-63 thrashing of Maryland at the Puerto Rico Tipoff Tournament on Sunday.
QU’S NEW GLASS CLEANER: Quinnipiac has made its mark nationally in the rebounding department in recent years, due in large part to the presence of Justin Rutty, who graduated last spring after establishing the NEC’s career mark with 1,032 boards. With Rutty’s departure, any lingering concerns regarding the Bobcats’ ability to control the glass have been answered with the emergence of sophomore forward Ike Azotam (Boston, MA/O’Bryant (Marianapolis Prep)), the Choice Hotels/NEC Player of the Week. Azotam leads the NEC with 14.0 rebounds per game and has posted three double-doubles in as many outings. As a result, Quinnipiac paces the NEC in rebound margin at +12.0 per game. Last Tuesday, Azotam matched a career-high with 17 points and hauled down a career-best 18 boards in a 68-62 win over Yale. The 18 boards is the highest total by an NEC player since Rutty snared 18 against Sacred Heart on January 22, 2009. The Boston product is now averaging 16.3 ppg and has converted 56.3 percent of his shots from the floor.
RED FLASH’S EATHERTON IS RED-HOT: It’s been nothing but net for Saint Francis (PA) sophomore forward Scott Eatherton (Hershey, PA/Hershey) early on in the 2011-12 campaign. Eatherton made his first 11 field goal attempts of the season before finally missing midway through the first half against Bucknell on Saturday. The Hershey, PA native drilled all eight of his shots from the floor earlier in the week as part of a career-high 20-point effort, eight-rebound, four-block night against Lafayette. On the year, he leads the NEC in field goal accuracy at 86.7 percent (13-15).
WC’S MURRAY DIALING LONG DISTANCE: Wagner is off to a 3-1 start for the first time since the 2008-09 season with the lone blemish coming in a competitive 78-66 setback to #4 UConn last Monday. While a deep Seahawk rotation has led to a balanced scoring attack, the outside shooting exploits of All-NEC guard Tyler Murray (Toronto, Ontario/Eastern Commerce) are worth noting. The senior guard has hit 11-17 shots from three-point range on the year, for a league-leading 64.7 percent success rate. He was 4-5 from outside the arc in an 87-83 conquest of NC Central last Wednesday, including back-to-back treys with under eight minutes remaining after the Eagles had sliced a 14-point Wagner lead down to four. Murray leads the Green & White with 14.3 ppg and is now just 99 points shy of 1,000 for his career.
CCSU’S THREE-MAN GAME: Take a peek at the top of the NEC scoring leaderboard and you will find a distinct Central Connecticut State flavor. The Blue Devils sport three of the league’s top-four point producers, led by freshman guard Kyle Vinales (Farmington Hill, MI/Phelps School), who averages 22.0 points per outing. He is followed by reigning NEC Player of the Year Ken Horton (Ossining, NY/Ossining) at 20.0 ppg and senior guard Robby Ptacek (Bayport, NY/Blue Point) at 18.0 ppg. Combined, the trio has combined for 78.6 percent of CCSU’s scoring this season.
SFPA’S SHANNON OUT FOR YEAR: Saint Francis (PA) suffered a huge blow last week when it was announced that junior guard Umar Shannon (Atlantic City, NJ/Atlantic City) suffered a season-ending knee injury. Shannon, who was diagnosed with a torn ACL, was a second team All-NEC guard last season and had racked up 26 points in the Red Flash’s season-opener against VCU.
FDU’S ROCHFORD TAKING NEC BY STORM: No NEC team has changed its makeup as dramatically as Fairleigh Dickinson. The Knights’ top-six scorers are all newcomers, one of whom, junior forward Kinu Rochford (Brooklyn, NY/James Madison (Globe CC)), has already established himself as a force in the paint. Rochford, a transfer from Globe Institute, posted a pair of double-doubles to begin his FDU caeer, including a 15-point, 12-rebound performance in the season opener against Providence. Rochford currently leads the Knights with 16.0 ppg and ranks second in the league with 11.3 rpg.
DID YOU KNOW?: Sacred Heart is the first NEC team to participate in the four-year history of the Cancun Challenge. The Pioneers take on Hampton on Tuesday and either Southern Ilinois or Lipscomb on Wednesday. Sacred Heart last left the mainland to compete in a tournament back in 2003 when the Pioneers took part in the San Juan Shootout.
CCSU’S KEN HORTON TOPS ACTIVE SCORING LIST: The NEC begins the 2011-12 campaign with three returning players already members of the 1,000-point scoring club, and a host of others set to join the ranks as the season progresses. There are 172 players in NEC history who have reached the 1,000-point plateau since the league began sponsoring basketball in 1981. CCSU senior forward Ken Horton (Ossining, NY/Ossining) is the leading active scorer with 1,495 points. Quinnipiac senior guard James Johnson (Brooklyn, NY/Bishop Loughlin) is next with 1,261 and CCSU senior guard Robby Ptacek (Bayport, NY/Blue Point) has accumulated 1,082 points. The next line of players on pace to reach 1,000 this season include Wagner senior guard Tyler Murray (Toronto, Ontario/Eastern Commerce) (901), St. Francis (NY) senior forward Stefan Perunicic (Belgrade, Serbia/Srednja Turisticka Skola) (856), Wagner senior guard Chris Martin (Sicklerville, NJ/Winslow Township (Apex Academies)) (844) and Sacred Heart junior guard Shane Gibson (Killingly, CT/Killingly) (814).
