NEC TOURNAMENT SEMIFINAL STORYLINES
ONES AND TWOS: The one and two seeds have both advanced to the semifinals for the fourth straight year. FDU is playing on Semifinal Thursday for the seventh time in as many years, while Mercyhurst is the in the NEC final four in its first tournament appearance.
UPSET-MINDED: No. 5 Le Moyne looks to go for back-to-back upsets after taking down fourth-seeded Wagner on Thursday. The Dolphins pulled off a quarterfinal upset for the second straight year.
RUBBER MATCH: LIU and Mercyhurst split their season series and will play its decisive third game in the NEC semifinals. The two contests were decided by a combined eight points, with the Sharks winning by five in Erie and the Lakers claiming victory by three in Brooklyn.
THEY MEET AGAIN: For the second time in three years, FDU and Le Moyne will battle in the NEC semifinals. The two teams last faced off in 2024 where the No. 2 Dolphins defeated the third-seeded Knights, 52-38. Le Moyne was the league runner-up that year. It marked the first time the two teams met in the NEC postseason.
STREAKING KNIGHTS: FDU is riding a 20-game win streak heading into the semis, marking the fourth longest in the country. The Knights have also won 38 straight against NEC foes.
HIGH-SCORING: LIU scored 99 points in its quarterfinal win over Chicago State. It’s the program’s first game with 90-plus points since February 2, 2004 and first of the Sharks era.
20-AND-10: On Monday, NEC Player of the Year Kadidia Toure recorded her 12th game of at least 20 points and 10 rebounds, which is tied with two others for the most in the nation.
MAKING NOISE: After its quarterfinal victory on Monday night, Le Moyne is, now, unbeaten in the NEC quarterfinals through its first three tournament appearances. Overall, the Dolphins are 4-2 in NEC postseason play.
COUPLE OF FIRSTS: Two NEC coaches earned their first conference postseason victories in Monday's quarterfinals in LIU's Neil Harrow and Mercyhurst's Erin Mills-Reid.
ON FIRE: The Lakers have are 13-2 since January 10 and are winners of seven straight.
SEED-OLOGY: The No. 1 seed has won the NEC Tournament title twice in the past four years and six times since 2015. The second-seeded team has advance to the final in each of the last three seasons and seven times since 2010. The three seed has not made a title game appearance since 2022, but has made six championship game appearances since 2009. Le Moyne could become just the third-ever No. 5 seed to advance to the title tilt and first since 2015.
Team-By-Team Capsules
#1 FDU (28-4, 18-0 NEC)
- FDU will be making its 31st overall appearance in the NEC Tournament.
- FDU ran the table in NEC play once agin and posted the program’s second straight undefeated season. In the process, the Knights became the became just the second team to post back-to-back undefeated seasons in league play - joining Monmouth (1987-88, 1988-89).
- The Knights are one of two teams nationwide to have back-to-back unbeaten conference seasons, joining reigning nation champion No. 1 UConn.
- FDU is also one of three squads in the country to go undefeated in conference play - joining No. 1 UConn (BIG EAST) and No. 2 UCLA (Big Ten).
- Of the six teams that have previously turned the undefeated trick, all but one (Monmouth in 1987-88) went on to win the NEC Tournament title.
- FDU rides some serious momentum into the NEC postseason. The Knights have not lost a game in over three months, since falling to America East foe Binghamton on December 29. Their current 20-game winning streak is the fourth longest in the nation.
- FDU has also won a record 37 straight NEC regular seasons games with its last one coming on Thursday, March 5 over Saint Francis, 61-39. The Knights broke the previous record held by Monmouth (1986-89).
- The Knights have now qualified for each of the past 11 NEC Tournaments.
- FDU is a three-time NEC Tournament Champion (1990, 1992, 2025).
- FDU has been a top-four seed in each of the past seven years.
- This will be the fourth time since 2021-22 — and the fifth time in program history — that FDU is the #1 seed. The Knights won their first NEC title as the one seed last season.
- The Knights own a 18-28 record in the NEC postseason, including a 8-9 mark against current NEC squads.
- This season marks FDU’s third postseason appearance under third-year head coach Stephanie Gaitley.
- Gaitley is the conference’s only current coach to have NEC postseason experience at multiple institutions as a head coach. She piloted LIU Brooklyn to tournament appearances in each of her five years at the helm (2002-08), going 4-4 with a title game run in 2007-08. Gaitley also led Monmouth to the semifinals (2008-09), the quarterfinals (2009-10) and the title game (2010-11) in her three seasons as head coach of the Hawks.
- The Knights are back in the semifinals for the seventh time in as many seasons.
- FDU and Le Moyne last met in the NEC Tournament in the 2024 semis - seeing the Dolphins prevailing in Syracuse, 53-38.
- The Knights are making their second straight conference championship game appearance and third in the last four seasons.
#2 MERCYHURST (15-15, 14-4 NEC)
- Mercyhurst is making its first-ever NEC Tournament appearance in its first year of postseason eligibility.
- With Mercyhurst’s win over Le Moyne and a Chicago State loss on 03/05/25, the Lakers sealed the #2 seed in the NEC Tournament.
- The Lakers won their NEC Tournament debut against No. 7 Stonehill, 70-64, on Monday night.
- Mercyhurst is 7-7 overall at home this season, including a 7-3 mark against conference opponents.
- The Lakers are currently riding a seven-game winning streak coming into the semis - the second longest in the conference.
- LIU and Mercyhurst split the season series as the Lakers won 58-55 in Brooklyn on 02/21/26.
- Senior Jenna Van Schaik put up 23 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists in the Lakers’ first-ever NEC Tournament victory.
- The Lakers shot an efficient 44.6 percent from the field against the Skyhawks on Monday night.
- Mercyhurst took home its first two NEC major awards this postseason with Sofia Wilson winning Rookie of the Year and Cici Hernandez taking home Most Improved Player accolades.
- The Lakers also had two All-NEC first team selections for the first time in program history after Van Schaik and Hernandez both earned spots on the squad.
- Mercyhurst remains ineligible for the NEC’s AQ to the NCAA Tournament due to its current status as a reclassifying institution.
#3 LIU (20-10, 14-4 NEC)
- This year marks the 27th time that LIU qualifies for the NEC Tournament.
- LIU is making its first semifinal appearance since 2018.
- LIU’s lone championship came in 2001 when the third-seeded Sharks upset top-seeded Mount St. Mary’s.
- In this year’s tournament, LIU is the same seed as when it won its one and only NEC title.
- LIU has made four NEC title game appearances, with its most recent one coming in 2010.
- LIU is 16-25 all-time in the NEC Tournament. The Sharks have advanced to the semifinals 10 times and the title game four times.
- LIU is one of five teams in NEC annals to have two wins over the #1 seed. In 2001, the third-seeded Sharks defeated #1 Mount St. Mary’s in the title game, while in 2008, they knocked off top-seeded Quinnipiac in the quarterfinals as the #4 seed. Overall, the Sharks are 2-8 in the NEC Tournament when taking on the top seed.
- The Sharks were picked to finish eighth in the annual preseason poll, but ended up with a 14-4 NEC record and tied for second in the league standings.
- LIU’s 14 league wins are the most for the program since 2009-10 and the most in the Sharks era.
- The last time LIU played Mercyhurst in Erie, the Sharks came away with 86-81 victory on 01/08/26.
- Senior tranfer Kadidia Toure is one of three players nationwide to have 12 games of at 20 points and 10 rebounds and the only one in the NEC to have more than one.
- LIU dropped 99 points in its quarterfinal victory over Chicago State, which is the most in a game during the Sharks era and the first 90-plus point outing since February 2, 2004. It’s just the third game for the team with at least 90 points since 2000.
- The Sharks got their 20th win of the season on Monday - marking the team’s first 20-win season since 2011-12.
- Hannah Humphrey (27), Kadidia Toure (26) and Kionna Gaines (23) combined for 76 points on Monday night against the Cougars.
#5 LE MOYNE (12-20, 9-9 NEC)
- This is Le Moyne’s third consecutive trip the semifinals.
- The No. 5 Dolphins have defeated the fourth seed in back-to-back seasons after its thrilling win over Wagner on Monday.
- Le Moyne is, now, 3-0 in the NEC quarterfinals all-time after defeating the Seahawks on Monday night.
- As a reclassifiying NCAA Division I institution, the Dolphins are ineligible for the NCAA Tournament.
- Le Moyne is looking to make its second title game appearance in three years.
- Le Moyne is one of five schools to win their NEC Tournament debut, which the Dolphins did with a 79-59 win over Stonehill in 2024.
- The Dolphins also became the second team to advance to the tournament final in their inaugural season as a member in 2024.
- Le Moyne enters the semis winning seven of their last nine contests. However, both losses during that stretch have come on the road.
- On its way to the 2024 conference final, two-seeded Le Moyne defeated No. 3 FDU, 52-38, before falling to top-seed Sacred Heart.
- The Dolphins are 2-2 in NEC Tournament road games and are 2-0 at home.
- Through its first three NEC Championship appearances, Le Moyne has a 4-2 overall record in the postseason.
- Le Moyne leads the league in free throw percentage, going 79.0 percent from the charity stripe.
