CENTRAL CONNECTICUT 45, WAGNER 14
Putting up 21 points in each of the first two quarters, defending league champion Central Connecticut made a statement in its NEC and home debut with a 45-14 win over Wagner on Saturday. Rookie running back Gabriel Wiggins set the tone for the Blue Devils with a 97-yard return on the opening kickoff while fifth-year quarterback Brett Griffis accounted for his team’s final four touchdowns with three scores through the air and one on the ground.

LIU 27, MERCYHURST 24
LIU staved off a late Mercyhurst run to score a 27-24 win in both teams’ NEC opener at Shark Stadium on Saturday. The Lakers followed three-straight Sharks’ scores — a field goal and a pair of rushing touchdowns — with back-to-back touchdown passes by junior Alex Gevaudan, but LIU sealed the win after graduate linebacker Rafael Fasolino smothered Mercyhurst’s on-side kick attempt with 37 seconds left to play.

ROBERT MORRIS 33, Norfolk State 31
Robert Morris rode the coattails of a four-touchdown performance from sophomore signal caller Carson Haggard to nip Norfolk State in a back-and-forth battle by a 33-31 final. Connecting with sophomore wideout Jaqai Carter for the third time on the afternoon, and ending a 21-0 Spartans’ run, with a go-ahead 10-yard touchdown pass with 1:25 left to play, the Colonials survived a late scare and walked away with the win after Norfolk State’s 52-yard field goal attempt clanked off the crossbar as time expired.

#11 Austin Peay 42, NEW HAVEN 17
New Haven stayed within arms’ reach of Austin Peay in the first stanza, but the Governors turned a 14-10 lead into a 25-point advantage at halftime thanks to four-consecutive scores. Making his first career start at quarterback for the Chargers, sophomore quarterback Niko Boyce had a solid showing against the 11th-ranked team in the nation with 25-of-39 completions for 227 passing yards and a pair of touchdown passes to classmate Tommy Troy.

#4 Tarleton State 56, CHICAGO STATE 21
Chicago State kept pace with No. 4 Tarleton State through one half but fell victim to a barrage of second-half touchdowns inside Memorial Stadium on Saturday. Fifth-year wide receiver Kymari Gray was a bright spot for the Cougars against the nationally ranked FCS foe with a game- and career-best 130 receiving yards to go along with his fifth touchdown catch of the season.
