Amherst, VA -- Howard University men's golf team closed out its 2025 spring season with a 13th-place finish at the NCAA Amherst Regional, hosted by Liberty University and held at the Poplar Grove Golf Club (par-70, 7,212 yards).

Throughout the four-day (May 11-14) tourney, HU faced several challenges like stoppage of play, heavy rain, etc. Despite the obstacles, Howard finished strong in round three, shooting 16-over par (296).

"I am super proud of these guys," said Howard Director of Golf Sam Puryear after the tournament. "They showed up and played really well. We have a talented young group and it was great to gel at the right time while competing against the best. This shows where you stand."

Overall, the Bison shot 66-over par (906).

Fifth-year golfer Marcus Smith Jr. (Rockford, Ill.) led the way, firing 2-under par (68) in round three with four birdies. The All-NEC First Team selection tied for 40th overall (216, +6).

Sophomore Bear Huff (Riverside, Calif.) rounded out HU, shooting 34-over par (244) in 54 holes of play.

"We have done some good recruiting," Puryear continued. "What we are bringing in with these young guys will help us continue to be better. We are excited about the future."

No. 7 Oklahoma won the Amherst Regional (830, -10), four strokes better than No. 18 Vanderbilt (834, -6). No. 30 Tennessee finished third overall (835, -5), followed by No. 43 Wake Forest (839, -1) and No. 19 Pepperdine (849, +9).
