Geneva, OH -- The NEC’s most decorated women’s swimming & diving program just made its trophy case even shinier.
Going wire-to-wire, Central Connecticut completed its three-peat and will bring a record-extending ninth NEC title back to New Britain.
The Blue Devils finished with 726.5 points, fending off a challenge from Howard, which claimed second place with 683.5 points. Saint Francis U secured third (579.5) and Wagner rounded out the top four (540).
The night was not shy of entertainment, starting off with the 1,650-yard freestyle. Two-time defending champion Abbey Keane of CCSU broke away from the pack early on. However, the back-half of the race saw Saint Franics U's Aurem Pifarre Planes kick it into full gear. Planes overtook Keane in the final 25-yards to earn the gold, touching in 17:08.09. The Blue Devils took home both silver and bronze, as Maggie Rutledge (17:08.50) nudged out Keane (17:10.69).
Continuing her impressive championship run, Howard's Chanice Posada finished first in the 200-yard backstroke, touching in 2:01.41. Posada took home gold in every individual event she entered at the meet. CCSU swept the final two spots again, with Megan Dunnigan finishing second (2:01.94) as Sophie Milhomens (2:02.02) landing in third, repeating last year's result.
Howard's Zuzu Nwaeze, who was named the meet's Most Outstanding Swimmer for the second straight year, took home the 100-yard freestyle gold in dominant fashion. Her 23.70 split at the 50-yard mark gave her the boost to finish under 50 seconds, clocking a 49.71, the fastest time in the NEC this season. Nwaeze also won the 50 and 200 freestyle events earlier in the meet, and became the first HBCU swimmer in NCAA history to post an NCAA ‘B’ cut time when she led off the 200 freestyle relay in 22.57 on Thursday. Wagner's Mia Goodale gave Nwaeze a run for her money, coming in at 50.98. Oksana Horova added points to the board for the SFU, taking home bronze in 51.24.
The 200-yard breaststroke saw the spotlight go to Wagner's Rebekka Luoto, who repeated as champion. The sophomore built a good-sized lead through 200-yards (1:03.60), two seconds ahead of her nearest rival. Touching in 2:16.27, Luoto held off a fast-closing Zaylie-Elizabeth Thompson of Howard by a second. Thompson's 2:17.48 added more points for the Bison, while Wagner's Lia Vendel took home a bronze after finishing in 2:20.29.
Wagner freshman Gaya Savran captured the 200-yard butterfly in her first NEC meet. She clocked a 2:01.30, three seconds faster than her prelim time. LIU's Laura Marin's 2:02.33 was a two second improvement from this morning's session, while Sara Turner of Saint Francis U claimed the bronze after touching in 2:04.52, a one second improvement.
In the final women's heat of the meet, the 400-yard freestyle relay, Howard continued its relay success. Zaylie-Elizabeth Thompson, Jasmine Morgan, Chanice Posada and Zuzu Nwaeze captured gold in 3:23.12. Wagner's Mia Goodale, Kaylin Lila, Allie D'Allegro and Rebekka Luoto collected a silver (3:23.60), with LIU's Gabriela Lima, Alex Ciorna, Allie Bashor and Laura Marin combining for the bronze (3:27.26)
