Staten Island, NY -- Looking to win its first NEC Men's Indoor Track and Field title in seven years and faced with dethroning a four-time defending champion, Central Connecticut had all the answers.
Trailing by 12 points entering the final day, the Blue Devils stormed back, delivering a record-breaking performance at Ocean Breeze in Staten Island, NY, to claim the program's first NEC title since 2018 and third overall.
With a meet record 179 points across the two-day event, the Blue Devils completed a linear Triple Crown, having already captured the NEC cross country title in the fall and the outdoor track and field championship last spring.
In ending Wagner's four-year reign, CCSU posted the highest team point total at an indoor championship meet since since FDU's 171-point benchmark back in 1992.
Wagner earned runner-up in the team standings with 140 points, with Stonehill (89.5), league newcomer Chicago State (78) and Saint Francis U (55.5) rounding out the top five.
Powered by seven first-place finishes, the Blue Devils made noise in a plethora of events. Samuel Whittaker (3000m), Jake Ireland (800m, Mile), Kymot Phillip (500m) and Lucas Figuieredo (400m) all stood atop the podium. CCSU also won gold in both the DMR and the 4x400m relay. Whittaker added a pair of silver medals in the 5000m and the mile to earn Most Outstanding Track Performer (Distance) honors for the second straight year.
The Blue Devils received an extra boost in the throws as freshman Greyson Golda registered second place finishes in the weight throw (16.61m) and the shot put (15.22m). Golda collected Most Outstanding Field Performer (Throws) and Most Outstanding Rookie Performer accolades. Additionally, Tristan Smith tossed the shot put 15.15m to earn bronze.
The Seahawks soared their way to five top-step finishes with two-time individual champion Alex Taddeo (200m, 60m) joined by Christopher Millilo (weight throw), Jack Mason (triple jump) and Julio Martinez (pole vault). Mason added a second-place finish in the long jump to garner Most Outstanding Field Performer in the jumps.
Overall, Wagner totaled 14 podium finishes across the two-day meet.
Earning medals in five different events, Stonehill headed back to Easton, MA with medals in an array of events. Earning the lone gold medal, Patrick Garratt used a late kick to dethrone CCSU’s Whittaker in the 5000m. Jacob Pacheco added a second-place finish in the pole vault, while Ean Hynes raced his way to a third-place finish in the 60m hurdles. Stonehill also won bronze medals in both the DMR and 4x400m relay.
Chicago State impressed in its NEC Indoor Championship debut, thanks in large part to Raymond Oriakhi, the Most Valuable Performer and Most Outstanding Track Performer (Sprints). The senior won the 60m hurdles (7.95), while adding a second-place finish in the 200m (21.53) and bronze medal in the 400m (48.44). Oriakhi also ran the anchor leg on the Cougars’ silver medal 4x400m relay squad.
On Monday, Nikai McNee (triple jump), Earnest Davenport (high jump), Trevon Prince (500m) and Ishan Cooper (60mH) all recorded second place finishes to boost Chicago State to a fourth-place team showing.
Senior Julian Saunders was the lone medalist for Saint Francis U on Monday by claiming second in the 60m dash (6.91).
In his NEC Indoor Championship debut, FDU freshman Ethan Ruffin left Staten Island a champion after clearing 2.02m in the high jump. Chase Lopez added a third place finish in the 800m run for the Knights.
LIU's Elechio Scott earned silver in the 400m dash for the Sharks' lone medal of the meet.
All gold medal finishers received All-NEC first team honors, while silver medal winners earned All-Conference second team accolades. The highest finishing rookie in each event was tabbed to the All-Rookie squad.
