Sacred Heart Wraps Play at NCAA Women's Golf Regional

5/10/2023

LEADERBOARD

Athens, GA -- To best put into perspective the Sacred Heart Women's Golf Team's performance at the 2023 NCAA Athens Regional is to compare it to the 2022 results at the Stanford Regional.

The Pioneers went 324-314-300 (+86) a year ago on the 138 slope Stanford University Course. The University of Georgia Course is a 139 and SHU, which shot 321 today, finished 80 over par in 12th place.

You also must realize that teams from the Northeast rarely finish better than the bottom three of the regionals let alone advance out of it.

Senior captain Kailee Welch, who is coming back next year as a graduate student, had the best overall tournament for her team. She tied for 47th at 232 (77-74-81).

The best third round from the Northeast Conference Champions was sophomore Maya Robilio, who had a two-over, 74 today. She birdied 17, 18 and seven as the Pioneers started off the back again. 2023 NEC medalist, Pio junior Chantal El Chaib, finished tied for 57th this week at 23 over par.

For more perspective on trying to be among the five teams heading to the national championships at Scottsdale, look at who did not make it from Athens; Ohio State, Maryland and Kansas are three of the seven. On the other hand, Georgia, which ran away with first place on day one, South Carolina, San Jose State, Ole Miss and Augusta will be trying to win a national title later this month.

There is more good news for the Pios. The six SHU players who competed at the Athens Regional, five of whom played their second consecutive NCAA event, are back to try to make it three straight NEC championships in 2024.
