Daytona Beach, FL - Following another beautiful day and favorable conditions on the Hills Course in Daytona Beach, FL at LPGA International, Sacred Heart remained atop the team leaderboard through 36 holes at the Northeast Conference Women’s Golf Championship.
After firing a 297 as a team today and 600 over two rounds, the Pioneers bettered their own 36-hole NEC Championship record by one stroke, which they set in 2017. However, SHU's lead was cut to just three strokes as Delaware State (603) fired an impressive 2-over 290 during day two for the lowest team round of the tournament. FDU (612) climbed its way into the top three after shooting 298 today.
2022 NEC Rookie of the Year
Chantal El Chaib (Abu Dhabi, UAE/The British School) wrapped up the second round of the tournament one stroke under par and is currently the sole leader at 1-under 143 heading into the final day of competition. In the front nine, she collected three birdies and tacked on a fourth in the back nine. Picking up a pair of birdies was senior teammate
Kailee Welch (Huntington Beach, CA/Mater Dei), who shot a 73 and sits in third place with a 1-over 145.
Shooting one of the best rounds in championship history, graduate student
Ana Ferreyra-Heit helped lead Delaware State to second place on the team leaderboard. She slid into second place with an even-par 144 through two rounds after carding a 4-under 68 today. Ferreyra-Heit scattered five birdies to post the second-lowest single-round performance in NEC Championship annals. LIU's Marisol Doglioli set the record with a 66 at the 2014 meet.
UMES rookie
Veronica Chen remained in the top-five after Monday’s round. She shot an even par through the front nine and picked up a birdie on hole 16 before finishing with a 2-over 74 today and 5-over 149 through 36 holes.
Rounding out the top five is FDU's
Kaitlyn You (Torrance, CA/Torrance), who is 7-over 151 through two rounds. Recording four birdies on the day, You helped boost the Knights into third place.
Anete Liis Adul made a massive leap into sixth after taking a whopping ten strokes off her round from yesterday. Climbing 14 spots, Adul is now 8-over 152 after shooting 1-under 71 in the second round with five birdies. Tied for seventh is FDU's
Abbey Baker (Nova Scotia, Canada) at 9-over 153 (76-77).
Part of the three-way tie for seventh place is Howard’s
Morgan Horrell (Dallas, TX/Hebron High School) and
Jada Richardson (Suwanee, GA/Wesleyan School). Each enter the final round with a 9-over 153, Horrell shot 2-over 74 and Richardson fired 5-over 77 on the day to help Howard in contention in fourth place.
The final round is set for Tuesday morning with tee times beginning at 7:30 am.
