Geneva, OH -- Central Connecticut moved one step closer to capturing its first NEC Women's Swimming & Diving championship in six years.

Building its lead on the fourth day of the 2023 conference meet at Spire Institute in Geneva, OH, CCSU upped its point total to 513, giving the Blue Devils 66.5 points of separation with second place Wagner (446.5). Howard is in third (395), while LIU (381.5) pulled within striking distance of a top-three spot after a huge night. Sacred Heart (301) is sitting in fifth.

CCSU managed to add to its advantage despite LIU making its presence felt by taking gold in every swimming event.

The Sharks began the evening session with a gold medal finish from Ella Johnson, who comfortably touched first with 2.5 seconds to spare in the 200 yard butterfly. She was timed in 2:01.41. Sara Turner from Saint Francis U took silver, clocking in at 2:03.97, followed by Howard’s Alana Jose finishing in third with a 2:05.91.

LIU’s Maaike Broersma posted a 54.38 to claim the 100 yard backstroke. Standing together for second place on the podium were Aidan Condit from LIU and Shamiya Guirre from Wagner, who swam identical 55.72 times.

Taking their third gold medal of the evening, LIU’s Venna Andersen touched the wall first in the 100 yard breaststroke in 1:02.27. In a tight finish for second, Cassidy Stotler from CCSU posted a 1:03.65, just 0.02 seconds ahead of Howard’s Zaylie Thompson and her time of 1:03.67.

In a clutch performance, rookie diver Jewelle Maziarz produced 48 points on her sixth and final dive to finish atop of the podium and collect 20 points for Central Connecticut in the one-meter dive. She compiled 245.60 points to beat out Wagner's Meliti Efthimiou (241.80) and Sacred Heart's Lola Barrett (240.75) in a tight competition.

LIU concluded the evening with a comfortable win in the 400 medley relay race with a five-plus second cushion. Maaike Broersma (53.83), Venna Andersen (1:02.32), Ella Johnson (55.02) and Aidan Condit (52.02) produced 40 points for the Sharks after being times in 3:43.19. Central Connecticut's Katie Czulewicz (56.83), Cassidy Stotler (1:03.41), Megan Dunnigan (56.35) and Shannon Welcome (51.71) recorded a silver finish, touching in at 3:48.30. Wagner's Shamiya Guirre (56.71), Lia Vendel (1:04.35), Presley Staretz (56.99) and Olivia Bishop (50.65) recorded a 3:48.70 time to finish just 0.40 seconds behind the Blue Devils for a bronze finish to conclude the evening.

The NEC Men's Swimming and Diving Championships will resume on Saturday morning at 10:00 am with the 1,650 freestyle, 100 freestyle, 200 backstroke, 200 breaststroke, and 400 freestyle relay. Finals begin at 6:00 pm.
