TOP STORYLINES FROM #NECMBB WEEK 12

Here’s all you need to know from the 12th week of the 2022-23 season...

NEC ROYAL RUMBLE BREWING

Life in the NEC this season isn’t for the faint of heart.

We’re coming off another topsy-turvy week with momentum swings up and down the standings and home teams still struggling, not to mention a mid-tier pack that has swelled like a balloon.

Let’s start at the top and Thursday’s marquee game in Hackensack.

Coming off a pair of home losses last week, FDU used a 15-5 run midway through the second half to build a cushion and then hold off Saint Francis U for a thrilling 87-82 win to retake the pole position in the conference from the Red Flash.

Junior guard Joe Munden Jr. (Harlem, NY/Monsignor Scanlan) was the catalyst, finishing with a career-high 21 points to go with 10 boards in his first double-double of the season.

Josh Cohen (Lincroft, NJ/CBA) was terrific in defeat for the Red Flash, accumulating 26 points on 11-14 shooting. He added seven rebounds, four assists and three blocks.

The Knights didn’t stop there.

FDU went on to rally from a 12-point second half deficit at Merrimack on Saturday, scoring 52 points after intermission against one of the NEC’s elite defenses to post a 78-71 victory.

NEC Player of the Week Grant Singleton (Sumter, SC/Lakewood (St. Thomas Aquinas)) was unstoppable in this one, draining 5-8 from outside the arc - with many from NBA distance - as part of a career-high equaling 27-point effort.

Over two games, FDU shot 50.4 percent from the floor, 40.4 percent from three and forced 40 turnovers.

The wins boosted the Knights to 7-2 on the year and a one game cushion over...Stonehill.

The NEC newcomers did more than just push their win streak to three on Saturday with an 82-81 home victory over Sacred Heart before a big crowd at Merkert Gymnasium. The Skyhawks also separated themselves from the pack to take over sole possession of second place with a 6-3 league mark.

Stonehill shot a season-high 59.6 percent from the floor, including a blistering 77.3 percent (17-22) in the second half.

Fifth-year seniors Andrew Sims (Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape Regional) and Isaiah Burnett (Annapolis, MD/Glenelg Country School (Navy)) each went for 23 points in the win.

With the Skyahwks ineligible for the NEC Tournament until the 2024-25 season, that left six teams within 1 1/2 games of second place and in contention to host an NEC Tournament quarterfinal game heading into the final four weeks of the season.

Saint Francis U (5-3), which entered the week atop the table with a 5-1 record, also fell at CCSU on Saturday to fall to third place in the standings, but second in the NEC Tournament seeding if the season were to end today.

Merrimack (5-4) is a half-game back of the Red Flash, followed by Wagner (4-4) and then a three-car pileup with CCSU, Sacred Heart and St. Francis Brooklyn all tied at 4-5 on the year.

The Terriers made their move last week in a pair of high profile contests, winning 65-56 at Wagner on Thursday in a game that aired on CBSSN, before knocking off LIU, 71-59, in the 48th Battle of Brooklyn on Saturday.

CCSU had dropped four-of-five, but righted the ship on Saturday with an impressive 88-74 win over SFU that saw sophomore guard Davonte Sweatman (Boston, MA/Lawrence Academy) go for a career-high 20 points off the bench.

TERRIERS CLAIM BATTLE OF BROOKLYN

For the first time since 2020, Downtown Brooklyn bragging rights belong to St. Francis Brooklyn.

The Terriers jumped out to a 16-point lead at the half, forced 22 turnovers and coasted to 71-59 win over LIU in the 48th annual Battle of Brooklyn game, held this year at the ARC.

St. Francis Brooklyn redshirt freshman guard Zion Bethea (South Orange, NJ/Immaculate Conception (Hofstra)) earned Lai-Lynch MVP honors after posting a game-high 18 points. He added six assists and three steals.

“The coaches just trusted me and everything just kind of clicked today,” said Bethea after the game. “I want to thank my teammates for that because they trusted me and I was able to get it done.”

Junior forward Josiah Harris (Wilmington, DE/William Penn (Hutchinson CC/Cowley College)) set conference career-bests with 14 points and 14 rebounds in his third double-double of the year.

Senior guard Tedrick Wilcox Jr. (Pawtucket, RI/William E. Tolman (Dominican)) finished with 15 points and classmate Trey Quartlebaum (Lawrence, KS/Lawrence) scored 12 points in 11 minutes off the bench, draining 4-6 from outside the arc.

The victory completed a Terrier sweep of the Sharks for the first time since the 2018-19 season.

LIU still holds a 27-21 edge in the annual Battle of Brooklyn series.

SHARKS CLAMP DOWN FOR FIRST NEC WIN

These Sharks never stopped circling the water.

After an 0-8 start to league play and finding themselves down by as many as 14 points at Sacred Heart last Thursday, LIU put together a decisive second half run to take a lead it would not relinquish in a 74-70 win at the Pitt Center.

The 14-0 spurt was sparked by two triples apiece from Andre Washington (Staten Island, NY/Williston North Hampton) and Jake Cook (Watervliet, NY/Vermont Academy), and capped by a thunderous C.J. Delancy (Jonesboro, AR/Valley View) slam to take a 62-54 lead with 7:54 to play.

When the Pioneers sliced the deficit to two points in the final minute, it was Washington who answered with a top of the key jumper to made it a two-possession game.

Delancy led five players in double figures with a career-high 18 points on 7-9 shooting to go along with nine boards. Cook’s 14 points on just three shots marked a career-best against a DI opponent, while Washington added 15. Recent pickup Ahmed Essahaty (Wellington, New Zealand/Onslow College) added a career-high 10 points on 5-9 from the floor.

THE WEEK AHEAD ON NEC-TV

The CBS Sports Network crew will return to North Andover for the first time since the 2019-20 season on Thursday when Merrimack plays host to LIU in a 5:00 pm tipoff. Dave Popkin (PxP), Tim Capstraw (color) and Tykera Carter (sideline) are set for the call.

That same night, Stonehill will host its first-ever ESPN3 game as a member of the NEC when Saint Francis U pays a visit in a battle of NEC contenders. Tipoff is at 7:00 pm with Paul Dottino (PxP) and Joe DeSantis (color) on commentary.

The 13-game men’s TV package includes four linear telecasts on CBSSN and one on ESPNU. Five regular season games will be broadcast on ESPN3/ESPN+.

The NEC semifinals are set to be carried on SNY and ESPN3 on March 4, and the final on ESPN or ESPN2 on March 7.

MC’S BENNETT EARNS #NECBIGSHOT OF THE WEEK HONORS

With the game on the line on Thursday, Merrimack turned to a freshman in a big spot...and he delivered.

After CCSU used a late 7-0 run to tie things up against the Warriors in New Britain, it came down to a last possession.

Merrimack fed the ball to three-time NEC all-star Jordan Minor (Kingston, MA/Brimmer and May), who took the ball at the top of the key and backed his defender down into the post. When the double team came, he alertly spotted freshman Javon Bennett (Orlando, FL/Trinity Prep) on the right wing.

Catching the ball in shooting position, Bennett did not hesitate to let it fly, burying an NBA range three-pointer with 2.7 seconds on the clock to give the Warriors the 64-61 road win.

MILESTONE ALERT

Sacred Heart junior forward Bryce Johnson (Stockton, CA/St. Mary’s (Pomfret)) snared his 500th career rebound on Thursday against LIU.

Johnson, who finished with a 16-point, 10-rebound double-double in the setback, finished the week with 513 career rebounds.

He became the 147th player in NEC history to eclipse the 500-rebound plateau.

DID YOU KNOW?

Talk about moving the rock.

The NEC is currently the top-ranked conference in assist rate in league play. Heading into this week, 55.6 percent of the made baskets in NEC play have been assisted.

STAT OF THE WEEK

FDU graduate student guard Grant Singleton (Sumter, SC/Lakewood (St. Thomas Aquinas)) has made 33 consecutive free throws and hasn’t misfired from the charity stripe since a miss against VMI back on November 20. He is shooting 93.8 percent from the line this season, sinking 45 of his 48 opportunities.

QUOTABLE

“It goes from the three-point to the volleyball line to the halfcourt line. I can shoot as far as I need to.” - FDU’s Grant Singleton in the postgame interview on ESPN3 after hitting 5-8 from way downtown in the Knights’ win at Merrimack

“My teammates just trusted me. They found me and gave me the ball. They found me when I was open and shots were just falling today. The past couple of games my shooting was down, so today I just came out, found my rhythm, my teammates trusted me and we got the dub.” - CCSU’s Davonte Sweatman after shooting 8-10 from the field in a career-high 20-point performance in Saturday’s win over SFU

“Coming into this road trip we talked a lot about our defensive identity and something happened between the time we left Loretto to Teaneck and now to New Britain. To give a team 88 points is unacceptable. That game was lost in many ways in the first half when we allowed them to get too comfortable. Its that defensive edge you have to have every night. We came in here 5-1 and these guys need to understand when you have that record you get everybody’s best punch. They are going to be focused. We need to make sure that we are focused for 40 minutes.” - SFU head coach Rob Krimmel following his team’s road trip

NEC MONTH-BY-MONTH LEADERS

With January coming to a close, we present the leaders in various statistical categories on a month-by-month basis from the 2022-23 season.

Saint Francis U redshirt junior forward Josh Cohen’s (Lincroft, NJ/CBA) (scoring) and LIU sophomore guard Marko Maletic (London, Ontario/Saunders Secondary School (Lararmie County CC)) (made triples) are the only players to lead a category in each of the three months this season.

NEC ANALYTICS ZONE WITH RYAN PETERS

Each week throughout the 2022-23 season, NEC Overtime! blogger and NEC on the Run podcast collaborator Ryan Peters (@pioneer_pride) will contribute a series of analytically based tidbits covering NEC hoops.

FDU’s league-leading offense has many contributors, one of them being resurgent junior Joe Munden Jr. (Harlem, NY/Monsignor Scanlan). The 6’3” wing currently leads all NEC players in KenPom offensive rating (117.8) during conference play. Much of Munden’s high efficiency is fueled by his sixth-best turnover rate at 11.1 percent and true shooting percentage of 57.2 percent. To date the junior has scored in double figures for 8-of-9 league games - last season he broke that threshold just once out of 11 league games.

Something Chris Kraus has done exceptionally well in 2022-23 is get his team quality opportunities to score coming out of time outs. According to Synergy, Stonehill leads the NEC with 0.92 points per possession (ppp) and a 52.9 percent effective field goal percentage in its sets immediately after a time out. Of Kraus’ group, graduate seniors Isaiah Burnett (Annapolis, MD/Glenelg Country Day (Navy)) (54.9% eFG), Andrew Sims (Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape Regional) (60.3% eFG) and Max Zegarowski’s (South Hamilton, MA/The Tilton School (Franklin Pierce/Lynn)) (56.9% eFG) have been particularly lethal after the prolonged stoppages in play.

Based on data from Synergy, the top 5 NEC players with respect to points per possession in isolation plays are as follows: 1) CCSU’s Nigel Scantlebury (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena (Niagara County CC)) at 1.04 ppp, 2) Sacred Heart’s Raheem Solomon (Hartford, CT/Sacred Heart HS (Niagara)) at 1.00 ppp, 3) St. Francis Brooklyn’s Larry Moreno (Brooklyn, NY/Brooklyn High School For Law & Technology) at 1.00, 4) Stonehill’s Isaiah Burnett (Annapolis, MD/Glenelg Country Day (Navy)) at 0.944 and 5) Saint Francis’ Landon Moore (Bloomington, IL/Western Reserve Academy) at 0.93 ppp. Scantlebury has yet to turn over the ball in isolation situations and has posted an effective field goal percentage of 45 percent in 24 possessions.

At the moment, St. Francis Brooklyn’s Josiah Harris (Wilmington, DE/William Penn (Hutchinson CC/Cowley College)) has earned the mantle of the league’s “best mid-range shooter” as he’s posted 1.11 points per possession when taking a jumper between 17 feet and the front of the 3-point line. Additionally, Harris is a perfect 8-for-8 when in transition, illustrating an ability to rim-run despite his 6’8” frame. He’s utilizing his size in a big way, as he’s grabbed 31 percent of the opponent’s misses off the glass (1st in NEC league play) and 12.1 percent of his team’s misses on the offensive block (2nd in NEC league play).

He has scored 980 points in 84 games, including his time at Franklin Pierce and Lynn.

Stonehill senior guard Isaiah Burnett (Annapolis, MD/Glenelg Country Day (Navy)) extended his streak with at least one steal to 30 straight games dating back to last year. He is sixth in the nation with 2.6 spg.
