Daytona Beach, FL — After leading from wire-to-wire, Sacred Heart was crowned the 2022 Northeast Conference Women's Golf Team Champion on Friday. The Pioneers, who landed four student-athletes in the top 10, bring the coveted title back to Fairfield for the second time in program history after posting a three-round total of 923 at LPGA International in Daytona Beach.
Fairleigh Dickinson junior Victoria Schroedl (Berlin, Germany, Hans Carossa Oberschule) was crowned the NEC Individual Champion after turning in a three-round score of 7-over 223.
With the team and individual titles, Sacred Heart and Schroedl have earned the NEC's automatic berth to the 2022 NCAA Tournament. The 2022 NCAA tournament will be announced on April 27 at 4 p.m. ET on Golf Channel. 72 teams and 24 individuals will qualify for the regional round of the championship.
The Pioneers, who cruised to their first team title since 2017, carded the lowest team score in each of the Championships' three rounds. Holding an 11-stroke advantage over second-place FDU heading into Friday, Sacred Heart combined for a 302, the lowest round of the Championship, to secure the title by 15 strokes.
Three Sacred Heart golfers tied for sixth place to lead the Pioneers in their title run. Sophomore Margot Rouquette (Montiron, France/Northwood Prep), freshman Maya Robilio and Chantal El Chaib (Abu Dhabi, Uae/The British School) each carded 15-over 231's, while junior Kailee Welch (Huntington Beach, CA/Mater Dei) finished in a tie for ninth with a 18-over 234.
Fairleigh Dickinson, which passed Merrimack, LIU and Wagner on the team leaderboard on moving day, was the NEC Championship runner-up after carding a 938 over the three-day event.
Schroedl became the seventh Knight in program history — and the fourth straight FDU golfer — to capture the NEC Individual Championship. The junior, who jumped up two spots on the leaderboard and held a two-stroke lead after Round Two action, claimed the title with a 2-over 74 on Friday.
Wagner senior Heather McLean (Port Williams, Nova Scotia/Horton) trimmed a two-stroke deficit down to one with a 1-over 73 on Friday, but was unable to catch Schroedl. She took runner-up honors with a three-round total of 8-over 224.
The Seahawks closed out the NEC Championship in third place (944), while Merrimack (944) finished fourth in the standings. LIU (949), Howard (951), Saint Francis U (995) and Mount St. Mary's (998) rounded out the field.
The top-10 finishers were named to the NEC All-Tournament Team. Merrimack rookie Prakruthi Sastry (Bangalore, India/Mallya Aditi International School) joined junior Jacquelyn Stiles (Groton, MA/Groton Dunstable Regional) in earning the distinction. Howard rookie Kendall Jackson (Pearland, TX) and LIU senior Ashlee Garrett (Albuquerque, NM/St. Pius X) rounded out the All-Tournament performers.
Jackson, who carded the lowest round of the NEC Championship with a 2-under 70 on Thursday, eagled the 13th hole on Friday and finished with a 14-over 230. She placed fifth overall for the Bison.
