Emmitsburg, MD -- Down four goals on its home turf with under 12 minutes to play, top-seeded Mount St. Mary's women's lacrosse mounted a comeback for the ages.
The Mount (14-2) scored four goals in a 6:31 span to send the game to overtime, then won it 9-8 on a
Beanie Colson game winner with five seconds remaining in the extra session to claim the program's first Northeast Conference (NEC) title since 2005 and third in its history.
The Mount held Wagner (10-5) scoreless over the final 21:45 of play and also survived a lightening delay that stopped the game for 40 minutes with 11:26 remaining on the clock.
The Mountaineers were led by Alayna Pagnotta, who scored two goals and tallied two assists, including the game-winning assist. Sara Moeller and Colson each added two goals to guide the Mountaineers to their 14th straight win, a new program record.
Mount defender Kaitlyn Ridenour was named the NEC Tournament MVP after causing three turnovers, picking up five ground balls, and winning six draw controls over two tournament games.
Wagner's Megan Greco led all players with five goals, while Megan Drum added two goals and two draw controls.
The Mount's Jenna Oler made five saves for the Mountaineers, and Lauren DiStefano made 12 saves for the Seahawks.
The Mount got off to a great start scoring two goals in the first five minutes to hop out to a 2-0 lead.
Wagner responded with four goals of their own to take the lead. The run started with Greco's first goal and ended with Drum's second goal to make it 4-2 with 9:19 remaining.
Moeller scored her first goal about a minute later to cut the lead down to one, but the Seahawks extended the lead back to two on Greco's second marker.
Coming out of the break with a 5-3 lead, Wagner continued where it left off with Greco added two more goals to make it 7-3 with about 20:19 to play.
NEC Offensive Player of the Year Kate Kinsella then scored her only game of the contest on a free position shot to make it 7-4.
Greco's fourth straight goal for the Seahawks and fifth of the game gave the Green & White an 8-4 lead with 18:50 left on the clock.
With the Seahawks looking to kill clock and the Mount in desparate need of an offensive boost, Pagnotta answered the call.
The senior attacker scored two quick goals 31 seconds apart to make it 8-6 with 11:26 to play.
But with the momemntum shifting, the game was called due to lightening with both teams shifting to their locker rooms.
After the teams returned back to Waldron Family Stadium, Colson scored her first goal of the game on a rebound to slice Wagner's lead to 8-7 with 10:44 remaining.
Moeller netted the equalizer with 5:28 remaining after beating her defender and firing a shot far post.
Both teams had late chances to score the game-winner, but turnovers and a number of missed opportunities forced the game into overtime.
In overtime, the Mount had the first chance after winning the draw control, but Jordan Groover put the shot off the post. Wagner had three shots but could not find the back of the net.
Finally with 20 seconds to play, the Mount stormed down the field in transition. Pagnotta found Colson cutting to the middle, and she fired a shot past DiStefanoto for the golden goal.
The Mount outshot the Seahawks 27-26, with the Mount having a 21-13 advantage in shots on goal.
The Mount will find out who their NCAA Tournament opponent on Sunday at 9 pm on ESPNU.
