NEC PLAYER OF THE WEEK
TYLER SANFILLIPPO, WAGNER
Jr., 1B, R/R, 5-10, 190, lbs., Wayne, NJ/Seton Hall Prep
WEEK 8 STATS: .429 BA (6-for-14), 2 2B, 4 BB, 7 RBI, 3 runs, .556 OBP
Sanfillippo raised his batting average by 48 points last week, collecting at least one hit and one RBI in each of Wagner’s four games. The Garden State product reached base safely at least twice in every contest, beginning with an 11-10 mid-week setback at Big Ten member Rutgers. For the week, the starting first baseman batted .429 (6-for-14) with two doubles, four walks and a league-high seven RBI. Sanfillippo spearheaded the Seahawks’ offensive efforts in a NEC series victory over Sacred Heart, reaching base a total of eight times and scoring at least one run in all three games. The right-handed hitter produced a RBI single to give the Seahawks a 3-1 lead in the fourth inning of the series opener and he also played a part in the team’s ninth-inning, game-winning rally. With Wagner facing a 4-3 deficit and down to its final three outs, Sanfillippo worked out a walk and eventually came around to score the go-ahead run on a bases-clearing double by Anthony Pecora. Sanfillippo delivered a two-run double of his own in the ninth inning of Game 2, cutting SHU’s lead down to 11-8. The 5-foot-10 slugger opened the scoring in the fourth frame of the series finale. Stepping to the plate with one out and the bags juiced, Sanfillippo belted a double to left field to send the Pioneers on their way to a 5-4 win.
NEC PITCHER OF THE WEEK
TYLER MATTISON, BRYANT
So., RHP, 6-4, 235 lbs., Fort Ann, NY/Fort Ann
WEEK 8 STATS: 1 start, 0.00 ERA, 7.0 IP, 0 R, 4 H, 2 BB, 0.86 WHIP
Mattison improved his record to 4-1 by logging his longest outing of the season during Bryant’s 13-0 victory over Fairleigh Dickinson. The 6-foot-4 sophomore spun 7.0 shutout innings one day after FDU became only the second team this season to post a double-digit run total against the Bulldogs. Mattison limited the Knights to four hits, all of which were singles. He issued two bases on balls and registered a pair of strikeouts. The Empire State product held FDU hitless during five of seven frames, including a trio of 1-2-3 innings. He retired the last nine batters he faced prior to handing a 13-0 lead over to the bullpen. Mattison started his day by twirling a 1-2-3 first inning before encountering a few minor bumps during the second and third frames. The second-year Bulldog surrendered two singles in the second followed by two more base hits in the third, but he worked out of both jams by inducing inning-ending groundouts.
NEC ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
JOHN MACDONALD, BRYANT
Fr., RHP, 6-4, 215 lbs., Stamford, CT/Westhill
WEEK 8 STATS: 1 start, 0.00 ERA, 6.0 IP, 0 R, 2 H, BB, 6 K, 0.50 WHIP
MacDonald put forth a masterful effort during his first career start. Taking the ball for a mid-week battle against A-10 member Rhode Island, the 6-foot-4 freshman spun 6.0 shutout innings en-route to a 2-0 triumph over a Top-100 RPI program. Pitching to an 0.50 WHIP, MacDonald limited the Rhody Rams to two singles and one base on balls. The Nutmeg State product, who totaled six strikeouts, retired the last seven batters he faced. Other than the two base hits, MacDonald allowed only three balls to leave the infield. After surrendering a first-inning single to the URI leadoff hitter, MacDonald proceeded to record 10 outs in a row before a fourth-inning walk snapped the string.
