Daytona Beach, FL – The Robert Morris Colonials men’s golf team held off the Bryant Bulldogs in the final round of the 2019 Northeast Conference Men’s Golf Championship to capture their fourth overall tournament title, and first since 2015.
Robert Morris shot rounds of 300, 301, and 297 over the weekend, for a three-round total of 898 (+34). The Colonials had to fend off a final-round challenge from the Bulldogs, who rallied to get within striking distance, before RMU managed to close it out. Bryant finished six strokes back, with a 904 (+40) team total (308-301-295), to secure their second runner-up finish in program history, and their first since also placing behind Robert Morris in 2015.
Sacred Heart fell to third place after a final round team score of 315 (+27), while Fairleigh Dickinson held off the LIU Brooklyn Blackbirds for fourth place by a single stroke. The Blackbirds shot the best team round of the field on Sunday with a 291 (+3).
Fairleigh Dickinson junior
Florian Schroedl (Berlin, Germany / Hans
Carossa Oberschule) completed a final round for the record books to secure the 2019 NEC men’s individual championship. Schroedl shot a four-under 68 on Sunday, tied for the seventh lowest 18-hole performance in tournament history. His 215 (-1) for the weekend, tied him for the tenth lowest 54-hole score all-time at the NEC Championships. Schroedl’s victory gives the Knights’ their first individual champion since U Minn Woon in 2016. The Berlin, Germany native sank five of his 10 birdies on the weekend in Sunday’s final round to finish four strokes ahead of Robert Morris junior
Max Palmer (Novi, MI / Detroit Catholic Central). Palmer improved on last year’s third place finish by landing in second after carding an even-par 72 in the final round, for a three-round score of 219 (+3). Teammate
Kyle Grube (Indiana, PA / Indiana) also shot an even-par final round to finish in third place with a weekend total of 220 (+4). The individual leader going into Sunday, Sacred Heart sophomore
Saptak Talwar (New Delhi, India / International Junior Golf Academy) placed fourth with a 221 (+5).
The biggest mover of the final day was Bryant sophomore
Nick Piersall (Portland, CT / Portland), who also etched his name into the record books with a final round 68 (-4), joining Schroedl in the tie for the seventh lowest single-round score at the NEC Championships. Piersall jumped up 21 spots on the leaderboard to leave LPGA International in a three-way tie for sixth with Bulldog teammates
Matthew Stafford (Suffield, CT / Suffield) and
Ryan Brown (Bedford, NH / Bedford). All three Bulldogs carded a 10-over 226 on the weekend.
Fairleigh Dickinson senior
Albert Arribas San Jose (Barcelona, Spain / St. Lawrence College) also made history, and produced one of the highlights of the day, by acing the par-3, 140 yard, third hole of the Hills Course.
Robert Morris will advance to the 2019 NCAA Men’s Golf Regionals, taking place the weekend of May 13-15. The NCAA Men's Golf Championship selections will be announced live via the Golf Channel on Wednesday, May 1 at 9:00 p.m. ET.
