NEC PITCHER OF THE WEEK
JACKSON SVETE, LIU BROOKLYN
Jr., RHP, 6-3, 185 lbs, Marietta, GA/Blessed Trinity
WEEK 3 STATS: 1 start, 0.00 ERA, 6.0 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 3 BB, 5 K
Svete returned to his home state and dealt No. 9 Georgia its first loss of the season. The righty spun 6.0 innings of two-hit ball to earn a 1-0 victory over one of the top-ranked teams in the SEC. Pitching to an 0.83 WHIP, Svete did not permit an extrabase hit and struck out five Bulldogs. Following a two-out single in the first inning, the right-hander retired six batters in a row. He also allowed a leadoff single in the fourth inning, but stranded the runner at first base.
NEC ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
VINCENZO CASTRONOVO
Fr., OF, L/R, 5-10, 205 lbs, Utica, NY/Proctor
WEEK 3 STATS: 1 app., .667 BA (2-for-3), 2 2B, RBI, run
Castronovo made the most of his first career start in the rubber game at ACC member Virginia Tech. The freshman outfielder, who doubled twice, drove in the first run of the 4-2 road win. Stepping to the plate for the first time in a scoreless game, Castronovo connected on a two-out RBI double in the top of the second. The Hokies intentionally walked the rookie in the fourth frame, but were burned by his bat again in the sixth. Castronovo belted a ground-rule double down the rightfield line and he came around to score the Bulldogs' fourth run two batters later. The two-double day was Castronovo's first appearance since he went 1-for-1 with a steal in a 4-3 setback to No. 1 LSU on February 24.
