Brooklyn, NY -- Former LIU Brooklyn track and field standout Jeremy Bascom became the third former Blackbird to qualify for the 2012 Summer Olympics recently, as his victory at the USA National Club Championships in Omaha, Neb. on July 6 secured his place on the Guyana National Team in London.
Bascom, who also competed at the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing, ran the 100-meter dash in 10.19, the fastest time by a South American athlete this year. The time also tied a Guyana national record set 34 years ago by former Olympian James Gilkes. Gilkes advanced to the semifinals in both the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes at the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow.
Running for the Central Park Track & Field Club with fellow Olympian and LIU Brooklyn alum Julius Mutekanga, Bascom has had breakout 2012 season, advancing to the semifinals in the 60-meter dash at World Indoor Championships in Istanbul.
Bascom and Mutekanga are joined by former LIU basketball player Kyle Johnson in London. Johnson will be a member of Great Britain's men's basketball team.
