Charlottesville, VA -- The Long Island University women's soccer team fell to No. 5 Virginia 2-0 in the first round of the NCAA tournament on Friday night at Klockner Stadium in Charlottesville, Va. The Cavaliers scored two goals in the first half to earn the win.

The Cavaliers got on the board early, scoring in the 4th minute off a free kick from 22 yards out. Julia Roberts served a free kick that went just over the head of junior goalie Jennifer Bannon.

Virginia secured a 2-0 pad as the first half wound down, when Amber Fry found Morgan Brian, who was recently named ACC Freshman of the Year, ten yards in front of the net. Brian sent the ball past Bannon into the left side of the net.

Senior Sarah Laughlin proved a defensive force for the Blackbirds, sending a number of threatening kicks out of LIU territory. Senior Ariana Calderon had the lone shot on goal for the Blackbirds in the first half.

In the second half, the Blackbirds came out fighting adding three shots, keeping the Virginia offense at bay. Bannon stopped a shot in the 71st minute, her second of two saves during the game. Calderon took the ball up the far side of the field around the 80th minute charging the Virginia goal, but was called offside.

Junior Katie Egan had one of Long Island's greatest chances as the clock wound down in regulation, but her shot was wide.

The Blackbirds were out shot by the Cavaliers 19 to 4, while Virginia goalie Chantel Jones also had two saves.

The Blackbirds closed their season with a 12-8-1 record and an 8-2 record in conference play, with the game against Virginia ending a nine-game unbeaten streak.
