Javier Mojica Former NEC Men's Basketball Player of the Year Javier Mojica Joins Puerto Rico National Team 6/30/2008 New Britain, CT -- Former Blue Devil and the 2007 Northeast Conference Player of the Year Javier Mojica was named to the Puerto Rico National Basketball Team today. Mojica, a former walk-on who went on to lead the Blue Devils to the 2007 NEC Championship, is one of 12 players named to the team. They will compete in the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Athens, Greece from July 14-20 and try to earn a spot in the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing."This is an amazing accomplishment for Javier and we couldn't be more proud," Central Connecticut head coach Howie Dickenman said on Monday. "Javier has excelled on several levels since leaving CCSU following an outstanding career and this adds to an already impressive resume. To be able to represent Puerto Rico in the Olympic Qualifying Tournament and the chance to compete in Beijing is an incredible achievement. I'm thrilled for him."Mojica and the team will leave on July 1 to begin training for the qualifying tournament which begins on July 14 in Athens. The official website for the tournament can be found HERE.Mojica and his Blue Devil teammates made national news in 2007 when they captured their third NEC title since 2000 with a 74-70 win on national television over Sacred Heart. Mojica was one of three Blue Devils named to the NEC First Team and became the fourth Blue Devil to be named NEC Player of the Year. The team finished 22-12 overall and 16-2 in NEC play before winning three straight NEC Tournament home games to win the title. They lost to eventual national runner-up Ohio State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.Mojica averaged 16.8 points and 7.1 rebounds per game in his senior season in New Britain. He also posted 108 assists and finished his career with 1,302 points, good for 14th all-time at CCSU. His 131 career three-point baskets are fifth all-time in school history. Mojica also earned NEC Tournament MVP honors in 2007 after scoring 25 points and grabbing 10 rebounds in the final win over Sacred Heart.Puerto Rico finished sixth in the 2004 Olympic Games held in Athens. Their run included a win over the United States. In all, Puerto Rico has competed in basketball at nine Olympic games, including four of the last five, since 1960. They did not compete in 1980 and 2000. They won a Bronze medal at the 2007 FIBA Americas Championship played in Las Vegas.
