Somerset, NJ -- For the first time in school history, Sacred Heart is the recipient of the Northeast Conference Commissioner’s Cup, as announced by NEC Commissioner Brenda Weare this afternoon. Sacred Heart also ended 2007-08 as the women’s Cup champion for the second consecutive year, while Monmouth earned the men’s Cup award for the seventh year running.
Sacred Heart’s terrific 2007-08 campaign included NEC championships in women’s lacrosse, men’s golf, men’s indoor and outdoor track and field, and women’s outdoor track and field. The Pioneers also earned a share of the NEC regular season crown in women’s lacrosse.
“Winning the overall NEC Commissioner’s Cup, and three of the past five women’s Commissioner’s Cups, completes a wonderful cycle of accomplishment which began in 1999-00 when the University made the transition from Division II to Division I,” said Don Cook, Sacred Heart Director of Athletics. “I feel our athletic program has been especially blessed to have a tremendously supportive senior staff and a talented, dedicated team of athletics administrators and coaches. Without the support from the highest level we wouldn’t have the resources or opportunities to achieve all we have. Maybe, and most importantly, the coaching staff has recruited quality student-athletes, and even better human beings from terrific families.”
With 219.01 points, Sacred Heart outdistanced second place Monmouth by nearly 13 points to snap the Hawks’ four-year lock on the Cup. It marked the third-highest Cup point total for a winner behind UMBC’s 222.09 in 2000-01 and Monmouth’s 220.37 in 2006-07. In winning the women’s cup for the third time, the Pioneers recorded 124.89 points, the most by a league program in seven years.
Monmouth (100.02 points) edged out Sacred Heart (94.12) for the men’s cup, which has resided in West Long Branch since the 2001-02 campaign.
“I applaud the MU student-athletes for continuing to perform at such a high level,” said Dr. Marilyn McNeil, Monmouth Director of Athletics. “The Monmouth family is very proud of their individual and team accomplishments.”
Saint Francis (PA) recorded its seventh consecutive top-three Cup finish and placed third with 175.92 points. Robert Morris took fourth with 168.77 points, followed by Long Island in fifth with 154.48 points. Quinnipiac ended the year in sixth place (153.43 points), with Central Connecticut State (150.18) in seventh, Mount St. Mary’s in eighth (135.58), Fairleigh Dickinson (133.05) in ninth, Wagner (130.70) in tenth and St. Francis (NY) (61.96) in eleventh.
“The Commissioner’s Cup showcases an athletic program’s all-around excellence,” noted Brenda Weare, NEC Commissioner. “Winning the Cup is the culmination of a year’s worth of hard work and dedication by student-athletes, coaches and administrators. I congratulate both Sacred Heart and Monmouth for their outstanding accomplishments in 2007-08.”
The NEC Commissioner’s Cup was instituted during the 1986-87 season with Long Island winning the inaugural award. Fairleigh Dickinson and Monmouth lead all NEC schools with six Cups to their credit. Cup points are awarded in each NEC sponsored sport. For men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s soccer, women’s volleyball, football, softball, field hockey, women’s lacrosse and baseball, the final regular season standings are used to determine Cup points. In all other sports, points are awarded based on the finish at NEC Championship events.
