Somerset, NJ -- For the fourth year in a row and sixth time in the award’s history, Monmouth is the recipient of the Northeast Conference Commissioner’s Cup, as announced by NEC Commissioner Brenda Weare this afternoon. Monmouth also finished as the men’s Cup champion for the sixth consecutive year, while Sacred Heart earned the women’s Cup award for the second time in school history.
Monmouth’s outstanding year included NEC championships in men’s soccer, women’s lacrosse, men’s golf, baseball, women’s outdoor track and field, and men’s indoor and outdoor track and field. The Hawks also captured regular season crowns in football and men’s soccer.
"Every year, we make it a department goal to aim for the Commissioner's Cup," said Dr. Marilyn McNeil, Monmouth Director of Athletics. "Attaining it takes a total team effort from our 400 student-athletes and each of our 19 sports. This verifies our program-wide commitment and passion for excellence, and I am very proud of all our student-athletes, coaches and the Athletics Department as a whole."
With 220.37 points, Monmouth outdistanced second place Sacred Heart by 27.44 points, the largest spread in league annals. It also marked the second-highest Cup point total for a winner behind UMBC’s 222.09 in 2000-01. The Hawks also ran away with the men’s cup , establishing NEC records with 112.14 points and a 33.48 point margin of victory over second place Robert Morris.
In the closest race in NEC history, Sacred Heart narrowly edged out Long Island for the women’s Cup, winning 115.78 to 115.27. The second place overall finish for Sacred Heart matched its highest-ever overall placing (2003-04). The Pioneers also finished the year with a school-record 192.93 combined points.
"The performance of our women's programs throughout the 2006-07 NEC competitive year was emblematic of the consistency, hard work and dedication of a wonderful team of coaches and student-athletes," said Don Cook, Sacred Heart Director of Athletics. "Having won the NEC Women's Commissioner's Cup twice in the past four years validates the maturity and quality of the overall program. We couldn't be more proud, particularly in light of how competitive all the NEC women's programs have become."
Saint Francis (PA) recorded their sixth consecutive top-three Cup finish and placed third with 178.97 points. Quinnipiac took fourth with 174.50 points, followed by Robert Morris in fifth with 166.49 points. Long Island ended the year in sixth place (158.50 points), followed by Mount St. Mary’s in seventh (151.43), Central Connecticut State (148.77) in eighth, Fairleigh Dickinson (118.16) in ninth, Wagner (117.96) in tenth and St. Francis (NY) (64.65) in eleventh.
"The Commissioner’s Cup represents all-around excellence in an athletic program," noted Brenda Weare, NEC Commissioner. "To come out on top in any given year is a testament to an institution’s hard work and dedication of its student-athletes, coaches and administration. My congratulations go out to both Monmouth and Sacred Heart for their success this past year."
The NEC Commissioner’s Cup was instituted during the 1986-87 season with Long Island winning the inaugural award. Fairleigh Dickinson and Monmouth lead all NEC schools with six Cups to their credit. Cup points are awarded in each NEC sponsored sport. For men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s soccer, women’s volleyball, football, softball, field hockey, women’s lacrosse and baseball, the final regular season standings are used to determine Cup points. In all other sports, points are awarded based on the finish at NEC Championship events.
