Tournament MVP Kirby Day Of Mount St. Mary'sEmmitsburg, MD -- Junior Kirby Day (Forest Hill, Md./North Harford) (pictured to right) scored with 46 seconds remaining in the fifth overtime to lift top-seeded Mount St. Mary’s to its second-straight Northeast Conference (NEC) women’s lacrosse tournament championship with an 8-7 victory over #2 Monmouth in Emmitsburg, MD on Sunday.

After two scoreless overtime periods, junior Kelsey Withrow (Mariottsville, Md./Liberty) caused a Hawks turnover with 1:35 remaining in the fifth overtime. Day had her first shot attempt on the ensuing Mount possession saved by Jess Chapman (Rutland, Vt./Rutland) before Katie Mason (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) found Day open near the goal and Day buried the game-winning shot into the back of the net to end the game in the 75th minute.

Day, who had two goals in the Mountaineers’ (13-5) 16-5 win against Wagner on Friday, finished the afternoon with two goals and an assist to be named the NEC Tournament Most Valuable Player. Mason had two markers, including the game-tying tally in the second overtime period and added the assist on the decisive goal.

Jenna Duffy (Bel Air, Md./Catholic) added two goals while Naomi Campano Radio (Schnecksville, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic) posted 14 saves in the winning effort.

Megan Nutter (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) paced Monmouth (13-5) with a hat trick. Jeannette Stott (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern Regional) tallied a goal and two assists, and Chapman recorded 11 stops in the loss.

Each team had several chances to win the title in the first two sudden death overtimes, but could not find the twine until Mason and Day hooked up in the fifth extra session to end the longest women’s lacrosse match in NEC history. With the win, Mount St. Mary’s will host Manhattan, the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference champions, in the NCAA Division I Play-in game next weekend.

The Mount, who had a 6-5 advantage and the ball with 49 seconds remaining in regulation, seemed destined for its second-straight crown before Krislyn McMahon (Lynbrook, N.Y./Lynbrook) grabbed the ground ball off a Mountaineer turnover with 46 seconds remaining to set up a Colleen Murphy (Colllegeville, Pa./Methacton) tally off a Stott feed with 4.8 seconds remaining in regulation and knot the contest at 6.

In the first of two mandatory overtime periods, Kaitlyn Robinson (Huntington Station, N.Y./St. Anthony’s) fired a shot from 15-yards out into the netting to hand the Hawks a 7-6 advantage with 2:46 left in the first extra session.

With time dwindling down in the second overtime, Day found Mason with 32 seconds remaining to tie the contest at 7 and force sudden death.

Mount St. Mary’s missed two shot attempts in the third extra session. Carolyn Raveia (Fairfax, Va. W.T. Woodson) shot was blocked with 2:34 on the clock in the fourth overtime and Katie Degen (Glen Head, N.Y./North Shore) gave Monmouth its final scoring chance with five seconds remaining in the session, but her shot went wide.

Regulation was a game of runs. The Mount opened the contest with a pair of goals to grab a 2-0 edge. Casey Paris (Longwood, Fla./Lake Brantley) scored off an Ellie Keener (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) helper at the 11:15 mark before Mason took a feed from Nicole Di’Angelo (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary’s) at 18:21.

The Hawks responded with a 5-0 run to grab a 5-2 edge. Degen scored with 5:42 left in the first stanza before Nutter scored consecutive markers to give Monmouth a 3-2 edge at the break.

Nutter completed the natural hat trick off a Stott assist at 32:14 before Stott capped the surge with an unassisted goal at the 33:22 mark.

Mount St. Mary’s responded to score four unanswered goals to take a 6-5 lead with 4:41 remaining in regulation. Duffy started the run at 37:20 before Day converted a free-position opportunity at 48:51. After Paris feed Duffy at the 51:30 mark, Erin LaMotte (Hampstead, Md./North Carroll) found the back of the twine on an 8-meter shot at 55:19 for a 6-5 edge and to set up the dramatic final 19 minutes and 55 seconds.
