Somerset, NJ
-- For the third time in the award’s history, Monmouth is the winner of the Northeast Conference Commissioner’s Cup, as announced by NEC Commissioner John Iamarino this afternoon. Monmouth, which also won the Commissioner’s Cup for the 1990-91 and 1997-98 seasons, also concluded the year as the men’s Cup champion, while Sacred Heart claimed its first women’s Cup award.

A strong spring season clinched the Cup for Monmouth, which included NEC titles in men’s and women’s outdoor track and field, and NEC Tournament appearances in baseball, softball and women’s lacrosse. With 198.51 points, Monmouth won by a its their best-ever finish in the Cup standings. St. Francis (PA) placed third (175.13 points), followed by Quinnipiac (172.02) in fourth and Long Island (168.77) in fifth place.

"Our athletics department and the University couldn't be prouder of the efforts our student-athletes put forth this season," said Dr. Marilyn McNeil, Monmouth Director of Athletics. "Winning the Commissioner's Cup is emblematic of all the hard work that all of our student-athletes put in, not only during their regular seasons, but also during their respective off-seasons. Every single student-athlete and coach played a part in Monmouth winning the Commissioner's Cup."

The NEC Commissioner’s Cup was instituted during the 1986-87 season with Fairleigh Dickinson leading all schools with six championships. Cup points are awarded in each NEC sponsored sport. For men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s soccer, women’s volleyball, football, softball, field hockey, women’s lacrosse and baseball, the final regular season standings are used to determine Cup points. In all other sports, points are awarded based on the finish at NEC Championship events.
