Zavala helped Wagner earn a sweep of Mercyhurst to open NEC play last weekend after she went the distance in each of her two starts. The sophomore hurler was stellar for the Seahawks, posting a 0.50 ERA against the conference newcomers after allowing just one earned run. During that 14.0-inning stretch, she struck out 19 batters. Earning the starting nod in Saturday’s series opener, Zavala allowed one earned run on a seventh-inning base hit and registered 11 strikeouts to lead Wagner to the 5-1 victory. After her team closed out the day with an 8-2 triumph, the California product returned to the circle and tossed another complete game. This time, she earned a 2-0 shutout victory after she struck out eight Lakers and allowed just six base runners on four hits and a pair of walks. Earlier in the week, Zavala registered four strikeouts in a start against Big Ten member Rutgers. On the week, she registered a 2.47 ERA and 23 punchouts in three starts, two complete games and 17.0 innings. This is her first-ever NEC Pitcher of the Week award, and the first for a Wagner player this season. With 61 strikeouts this season, Zavala leads all NEC pitchers, while her 3.48 ERA is good for fifth overall.
