Gillis made a splash for the Lakers in their Division I debut this past weekend. The rookie catcher/third baseman began her career by combining for a .667 batting average in a pair of games. Going 4-for-6, she drove in three runs, slugged .833 and posted a .667 on-base percentage in games against Saint Peter’s and Norfolk State on Saturday. A native of Gibsonia, PA, Gillis went a perfect 3-for-3 and drove in half of Mercyhurst’s four runs in her first-ever collegiate game. Against the Spartans, she laced her first extra-base hit — an RBI double — in the seventh inning. Gillis enters the week ranked first in the NEC in batting average and on-base percentage. She is the first-ever Laker softball player to garner weekly recognition from the NEC.
