Zovko tacks on yet another NEC Rookie of the Week award to a debut season that has Rookie of the Year written all over it. The setter has consistently been the league’s top rookie since the start of the season in August with this marking the eighth time in nine weeks that she is tabbed NEC Rookie of the Week. A native of Bedford, MA, Zovko continues to do a little bit of everything for the Pioneers, who held on to their spot atop the NEC standings despite putting a blemish on their previously undefeated record of 7-0. Starting the week off with a 3-2 non-conference loss to Bryant and a 3-1 defeat to FDU on Friday, Sacred Heart downed LIU in three sets on Saturday to remain in control of first place. During that stretch, Zovko averaged 7.75 assists, 2.42 digs, 1.92 kills and 0.75 blocks per set. Compiling seven blocks in a five-set thriller against the Bulldogs, she posted a double-double (33 assists, 12 digs) and added eight kills in the Pios’ first defeat of NEC play against the Knights on Friday. One day later, she helped Sacred Heart rebound in commanding fashion in a straight-set win over LIU after she came just shy of her first career triple-double with 33 dimes, nine kills and nine digs. Adding five service aces last week, Zovko continues to rank amongst the nation’s leader in the category, as she is second in aces per set (0.66) and third in total aces (44).
