Austin worked her way back into LIU’s starting rotation for the first time since early December, and she did not disappoint. Knocking down eight three-pointers in a two-game stretch, the junior guard averaged 24.0 points, 4.5 assists and 4.0 rebounds in 35.5 minutes of work to help the Sharks go 1-1 in NEC action. In addition, Austin became the first Shark to string together back-to-back 20+ point games this season after she followed a then career-best 23-point outing against Sacred Heart on Thursday with a 25-point performance in LIU’s upset of St. Francis Brooklyn on Saturday. Against the Terriers, the Texas Southern transfer had a hand in 15 of LIU’s 29 buckets, converting on nine field goals — including a half-court buzzer beater at the end of the second quarter — while assisting on a career-best six others. Averaging 9.9 points per game heading into the weekend, the Compton, CA native boosted her season average to 11.4 points per contest after last week’s offensive outbursts. With her first-ever weekly award, Austin becomes the first LIU player to earn NEC Player of the Week honors.
