Shumski spearheaded Merrimack’s impressive offensive output during a series victory over Big Ten member Michigan State. The senior shortstop recorded multiple hits and RBI during three of four contests. With the Warriors averaging 8.25 runs per outing, Shumski totaled nine hits and nine RBI while batting a league-high .563. He also drew two walks on the way to a .611 on-base percentage and scored five runs. Shumski went 3-for-5 at the plate with three RBI and two runs in Friday’s series-opening victory. He opened the game’s scoring with a run-scoring sacrifice bunt in the third inning and delivered the game-winning hit in the 11th frame. After the first two batters reached base, the senior laced a two-run double down the leftfield line to break a 6-6 tie. Following an 0-fer in the first half of Saturday’s twin bill, Shumski reached base safely on four occasions (2 H, 2 BB) in the nightcap. Coming up clutch again, the veteran infielder produced a bases-loaded single, which wound up plating three runs on the play, in the sixth inning of a 4-4 game. Shumski accounted for four hits and four RBI, matching his career highs, in Sunday’s series finale. His two-run, seventh-inning single gave Merrimack a 12-11 lead in an eventual extra-inning setback. Earlier, he ignited a comeback effort by cutting into a 10-2 deficit with a two-RBI double in the fifth frame.
