Going up against the circuit’s top-ranked defensive team, Kovatch produced the NEC’s first 40-point performance in nearly one year. The conference’s leading scorer poured in a season-high 42 points during Saturday’s first-place battle at Robert Morris. Kovatch, who also logged five steals and two assists, shot 47.1 percent from the floor against a defense that limits opposing teams to a league-low .354 field goal percentage. The Garden State product connected at a 40 percent clip from downtown, sinking eight triples in the last-second loss. Her final long-distance make gave the Red Flash a 60-54 lead with 3:12 remaining in the fourth quarter. The 42-point effort, which is tied for 10th place on the all-time NEC single-game scoring list, marks the first time a conference player surpassed the 40-point mark since Kovatch herself scored 45 points against Central Connecticut on January 21, 2017. Moving up the NCAA Division I leader boards, Kovatch ranks fourth overall in scoring average (23.8 ppg) and third in three-pointers per game (3.94).
