Mitchell did not miss a beat after the holiday layoff. After a strong season-opening performance at the Youngstown State Icebreaker on December 6, the former RMU football defensive end posted two top-4 finishes at the Penn State Indoor Relays on January 11. He added 44 centimeters onto his league-leading weight throw mark from YSU. His 17.43m (57’ 2.25”) fling placed him fourth at Penn State behind only throwers from Maryland, Pitt and the host Nittany Lions. Although he didn’t top his season-opening mark in the event, Mitchell actually earned a higher finish in the shot put competition at PSU. He put the shot 15.96m to take third place behind Penn State’s Darrell Hill and Maryland’s Josh Haghighi. Mitchell maintains a healthy lead over the NEC in both throws.
