Murphy was a monster at the plate as defending NEC champion Sacred Heart swept Mount St. Mary’s in a four-game home series. Sacred Heart’s junior shortstop posted a .579 on-base percentage over last week’s five-game sample that also included a mid-week bout with A-10 member Rhode Island. He batted .429 (6-for-14) with three extra-base hits, five walks, seven runs, and six RBI. Paring his numbers down to only include the Mount series, the third-year Pioneer went 5-for-11 with three bases on balls, four runs scored, and five runs driven in. Murphy opened the series against Mount St. Mary’s by going 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored. After walking and coming around to score in the fourth frame of Game 1, the left-handed hitting middle infielder laced a two-run double as part of the five-run fifth inning that broke the game open. His bases-clearing, three-run triple in the second inning of Game 2 proved to be the difference in SHU’s 4-2 triumph. He was hitless in two at-bats, but walked twice during Game 3. After dropping down a sac bunt and reaching safely on the play via fielder’s choice, Murphy scored on Matt Charmello’s walk-off grand slam in the 11th inning. The veteran shortstop had a hit and scored the first of the team’s two runs as part of a 2-0 shutout victory in the series finale. In one game vs. Rhody, a 7-5 setback, he had a hit, two walks, and scored three times. He laced an RBI triple and eventually came around to score to give the Pioneers a 3-1 third-inning lead over URI.
