Gaines won last week’s field award by virtue of her triple jumping ability and has retained the honor as a result of her latest effort in the long jump. The three-time NEC Indoor MVP leaped to a first-place finish at the Metropolitan Championships by producing a personal record bound of 6.16m (20’ 2.5”). The mark catapulted the veteran Blackbird atop both the NEC performance list and the LIU Brooklyn record book. Gaines surpassed teammate Jazmin Waller, who set the program standard at 6.11m earlier in the season. Gaines’ winning jump at the Mets ranks 10th overall on the NCAA Division I leader board and stands nine centimeters better than the NEC Indoor Championship meet record set by LIU’s Camilla Harris in 2003.
