Kona keyed Duquesne’s Week 9 shutout effort at the Jersey Shore, producing plays that snuffed out four of Monmouth’s drives. The free safety made six tackles, forced three fumbles, and recorded 1.5 stops for a loss in the Dukes’ 16-0 road triumph over Monmouth. Kona first struck with the host Hawks threatening on their opening possession. He broke into the backfield and sacked quarterback Craig Petersen for a seven-yard loss on a 3rd-and-4 play from just inside the red zone at Duquesne’s 19-yard line. Early on in the second quarter, Kona stuffed Monmouth ball carrier Julian Hayes shy of the first down marker on a 3rd-and-3 play and the Hawks again turned it over on downs. With the Dukes clinging to a 6-0 lead, Kona forced a fumble that Duquesne recovered on Monmouth’s 37-yard line and would eventually turn into another three points. On Monmouth’s very next play from scrimmage, Kona jarred the ball loose again, but Monmouth maintained possession at its own 19-yard line. Kona’s third forced fumble gave Duquesne the ball at Monmouth’s 23-yard line and led to a late second-quarter touchdown that put the Dukes up by a 16-0 count. He also made a half-tackle for a loss of one yard in the second half.
