Sacred Heart’s offense had averaged 6.5 points over its first two games, but Spence and the Pioneers had a breakout performance in a 24-21 win over Dartmouth on Homecoming Weekend. Forced into duty when starter Gregory Ibe was lost to injury in the fourth quarter of a setback to Bryant the week prior, Spence carried the load on the way to a 100-yard rushing performance. The burly back, who stands at 5-10 and 230 pounds, rushed 28 times for 129 yards and two touchdowns. He was at his best on Sacred Heart’s first and last possessions of the game. Spence was responsible for 49 of the 60 yards gained on the Pioneers’ game-opening drive that was capped by a four-yard scoring surge from the freshman. The rookie running back helped chew 7:50 off the clock, carrying eight times during a 17-play, 74-yard drive that ended on a go-ahead 22-yard field goal with 1:00 left in the fourth quarter. Spence produced the biggest play of that drive when he fell on top of quarterback Tim Little’s fumble, allowing Sacred Heart to retain possession at Dartmouth’s 5-yard line with 1:07 to go. His second rushing touchdown of the day came from 29 yards out and broke a 14-14 halftime time 2:35 into the third quarter.
