Layton is the second-ranked punter in all of Division I FCS and it was easy to see why on Saturday at Columbia. Showing off his lead leg throughout UAlbany’s road win over the Ivy League member, the sophomore boomed seven punts for an average of 54.3 yard per kick. He accounted for a net average of 42.9 yards per attempt, and that number includes a 21-yard net punt with under 2:00 remaining in the game and the Danes well in control. Layton successfully placed three of his seven punts inside the Lions’ 15-yard line, including two inside the 5. Layton’s first kick of the day sailed 47 yards where its wad downed on the opponents’ 3-yard line. He later booted a 53-yard kick that backed Columbia up to its own 1-yard line. Layton’s 47.3 yards per punt average trails only Fordham’s Patrick Murray (47.44) in the NCAA FCS rankings.
