Monmouth’s defense put forth another impressive performance to spearhead a second consecutive road victory, and Barroso was a key player in the effort. The sophomore linebacker made a game-high 12 tackles in the Hawks’ 24-12 win over NEC preseason favorite Central Connecticut. He recorded 1.0 tackle for a loss, a half-sack, and a pass break-up as Monmouth limited Central to its lowest offensive output (267 yards) over the season’s first four games, which included a visit to No. 12 James Madison. Barroso made a couple of key plays in the third quarter. He broke up a pass on a 3rd-and-4 play. Later in the period, he stuffed CCSU ball carrier Xavier Gaddy at the line of scrimmage during a 2nd-and -11 situation with the Blue Devils nearing midfield. Central would punt two plays later with Monmouth clinging to a 17-10 advantage. It is the second consecutive week during which Monmouth has seen one of its NJ Shore Conference high school recruits claim the NEC Defensive Player of the Week award. Last week, former Manasquan High School standout Dan Sullivan earned the honor after making 4.0 TFL in a 20-9 win at Villanova.
