Defending conference champion Monmouth moved its record to 2-0-0 thanks to the play of this week’s adidas/NEC Player of the week, senior RJ Allen. Allen, who set up fellow teammate Ryan Clark for the Hawks’ game-winner against St. Peter’s (W, 1-0) last week, tickled the twine this time with his first goal of the season and helped 18th-ranked Monmouth record back-to-back shutouts with a 1-0 blanking of Boston University. Set up beyond the box, the Hermann Trophy candidate and preseason All-American took a pass from the right corner of the field and dodged his way past two Terriers before unleashing a vicious strike from about 30 yards with 13:33 elapsed in the game. He then helped the defense hold this year’s favorite to win the America East scoreless through the remaining 76 minutes. Allen, who now has 30 career points in a Hawks uniform, has been a part of 38 Monmouth shutouts since 2008.
