Only four NCAA Division I heptathletes have produced a higher score than the one FitzSimons turned in at last week’s Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays. The Mount St. Mary’s senior, who won the decathlon at both the Penn Relays and the IC4A Championships in 2010, topped his previous personal best of 7,198 points by piling up 7,606 points at Texas. FitzSimons set six personal records on the day. His javelin throw of 58.91m (193’ 3”) exceeds the IC4A qualifying standard and stands as the fourth-best mark in the NEC this season. FitzSimons placed himself amongst the top-five NEC leaders in the long jump (6.82m), pole vault (4.50m), and high jump (1.93m). FitzSimons put himself in prime position to qualify for the NCAA Division I Championships, considering the nation’s top-24 scorers receive an invitation. In 2010, a score of 7,313 points was good enough to make the cut.
