Avella provided plenty of power during Monmouth’s NEC series victory at Quinnipiac. The left-handed hitting third baseman launched four long balls during the four-game, three-day set in Hamden, CT, going deep in all three of the Hawks’ wins. Avella, who slugged 1.308 over the four-game sample, went 5-for-13 at the plate with three walks, four home runs, seven runs scored, and 10 RBI. Avella went deep twice in the series opener, logging a career-high five RBI during the 11-5 victory. His three-run bomb gave Monmouth a 3-0 lead three batters into Game 1 and his two-run shot sparked a seven-run fifth inning that gave the Hawks’ an 11-2 advantage. Avella was active during Monmouth 8-2 win in Game 3. The sophomore hit a solo homer, came around to score after reaching base on a walk, and recorded a RBI sacrifice fly. Avella went 2-for-3 with three runs scored and three RBI in the series finale. Just as he had done in Game 1, Monmouth’s No. 3 hitter put the Hawks out in front, 3-0, by blasting a first-inning three-run home run. Avella’s lone homer-less game came against QU starter Kyle Birdsall, who became the first NEC pitcher to toss a no-hitter this season when he silenced the Hawks in Game 2. Avella, who is the younger brother of former all-NEC first baseman Vin Avella (Wagner), leads the league with seven home runs this season.
