Continuing his season-opening tear into conference play, Jones lifted his league-leading average to .471 during LIU’s NEC series victory at Sacred Heart. Jones, who entered the four-game set with the 23rd-highest batting average in the nation (.439), went 8-for-13 at the plate with two walks, four runs, and two RBI as the Blackbirds won three of four road games. The right-handed hitting catcher had five hits over seven at-bats in the front end of the four-game series, extending his hit streak to 15 games. He went 3-for-4 with two runs in the series-opening 6-3 win followed by a 2-for-3 performance with one run scored in a subsequent 3-0 victory. Jones’ hit streak came to an end in Game 3, a 4-1 LIU loss, but the veteran backstop managed to drive in the Blackbirds’ lone run of the game on a sac fly. Jones, who slugged .923 over the four-game clip, closed out the series by going 3-for-5 with a double and triple in Long Island’s 9-8 triumph. He has hit safely in 17 of 19 games during his junior season.
