With Long Island fighting for a postseason berth, Nowels put forth one of the best individual performances in the history of Blackbirds bowling. The rookie lefty posted a 199.89 average over the two-day event that consisted of nine traditional team matches. Accounting for the sixth-highest individual average of all bowlers on hand, Nowels spearheaded the five-win showing that lifted Long Island into the NEC’s postseason tournament. She filled 84.4 percent of the 90 frames she bowled and posted a .479 strike percentage. Occupying the anchor position in the Blackbirds’ lineup, Nowels opened the tournament by rolling a 194 game in a key victory over Monmouth. She became even hotter during the meet’s second day. Her high game of 235 led Long Island to an 881-854 upset victory over No. 8 Kutztown. Next, Nowels turned in a 205 game in a near-upset of National No. 1 Fairleigh Dickinson. In the next-to-last match of the meet, which pitted LIU up against its Brooklyn rival St. Francis (NY), Nowels spearheaded the Blackbirds’ successful comeback effort. With her team trailing by 70 pins after five frames, Nowels threw five straight strikes on the way to an 844-843 comeback victory over the No. 15 Terriers. In the words of LIU head coach Jocelyn Davis, who was a bowler on FDU’s 2006 NCAA title team, "Nowels was phenomenal!"
