Van Steenbergen accounted for the fastest 3,000-meter time by an NEC runner thus far this season. The first-year Colonial clocked in at 9:59.87, just shy of meeting the qualifying standard for the ECAC Championships. Van Steenbergen, who hails from The Netherlands, finished ninth in a talent-loaded field at the Penn State National Invitational. She is the second Robert Morris freshman this season to claim the rookie award, joining Yulia Vasilyeva who won the honor on Dec. 14 and currently ranks fourth on the NEC high jump list.
