Nelson took over the top spot on the NEC performance list in the 800-meter run, and breaks Jessie Gaines’ streak of NEC Track Athlete of the Week awards as a result. Running the event for the first time this season, Nelson claimed gold at the Boston University Terrier Classic. She crossed the line in 2:11.46 to edge out Dartmouth’s Christina Supino and Rhode Island’s Brittany Pelsue for the meet title. Nelson’s time is well under the qualifying standard (2:14.44) for the ECAC Championships in March. The former all-state runner for Red Bank Regional High School competed for Maryland as an undergraduate and has come home to exhuast her remaining eligibility as a graduate student at Jersey Shore-based Monmouth. Set to make he NEC Championship debut on February 12, Nelson became the first MU Hawk to win the indoor track weekly award since Michelle Losey held the honmor on four occasions during the 2009-10 campaign. (Freshman shot putter Rachel Aliotta brought the NEC field award back to Monmouth last week.)
