Leathley earned his first career start under center last week and responded by totaling 213 yards of offense and two touchdowns (one pass, one rush) against defending NEC champion Central Connecticut. The red-shirt freshman quarterback rushed 17 times for 112 yards and passed for 101 more. Leathley ran three times for 60 yards on a second-quarter scoring drive that pushed Albany’s lead to 14-3. His 20-yard touchdown rush capped the four-play possession. His nine-yard touchdown pass extended the Danes’ advantage to 24-6 heading into halftime. Leathley was 12-of-19 passing for 101 yards with no interceptions. He was the first Great Dane freshman to start at quarterback since 2006 and became the first UAlbany signal caller since 1989 to eclipse the 100-yard mark in both passing and rushing.
