Smith has played in two season openers at the collegiate level, and he has two NEC weekly awards to show for it. Twelve months after his collegiate debut against Georgia Southern, for which he earned the first NEC Rookie of the Week honor of the 2009 season, Smith started his sophomore campaign by notching the NEC Offensive Player of the Week accolade. The versatile Smith carried his team to a 3-0 victory over CAA member Maine, the Great Danes’ second in two seasons over the Black Bears. He ran 27 times for a career-high 129 yards, the final 29 of which allowed Albany to run out the clock. He carried the ball on four consecutive plays, gaining 17 yards, to set up the game’s lone score midway through the first quarter. Seeing time as a tailback, quarterback, and kick returner, the New York native totaled 150 all-purpose yards. Smith’s first start at the collegiate level could have proven even more fruitful, but his 47-yard third-quarter touchdown jaunt was negated by a holding penalty.
