Returning to the same track where he won the NEC crown in both the 110-meter and 400-meter hurdles as a freshman, Rutherford turned in a pair of conference-leading times at Monmouth Hawk Outdoor Opener. The sophomore bested a field of 30 entrants in the 400-meter hurdles by clocking in at 53.33, a time that qualifies him for the IC4A Championships. Rutherford was also the top collegiate finisher in the 110-meter hurdles where his time of 15.16 was second only to Harold Lathan of the Harcum Track Club. The former high school standout in New Jersey’s Shore Conference finished his day at Monmouth by running the second leg of the Hawks’ first-place 1600-meter relay.
