Gurrola continues to make an immediate impact on a youthful Red Flash squad that is beginning to show signs of improvement as she earns the first SFPA weekly honor this season with the Akadema/NEC Rookie of the Week nod. Gurrola came through with her arm and her bat in the team's first trip above the Carolinas this season. Gurrola hit .286 with 2 RBIs, one run scored, 3 walks and a .500 on-base percentage in four games last week. She started three contests on the mound, and went 2-1 with a 2.33 ERA, 8 strikeouts and just seven earned runs allowed in 21.0 innings pitched. She got the week started on the right foot, leading SFPA to a 4-3 win at Youngstown State. The freshman cruised through the first 6.1 innings before allowing a one-out, two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning, but she showed some poise by getting the last two outs for her first career victory. She even made an impact at the plate, converting a sacrifice bunt in the fourth inning, which eventually led to a run that gave the Red Flash a 3-1 lead. Gurrola then walked and eventually scored what proved to be the game-winning run in the top of the seventh inning. She didn't wait long to earn her second career win, pitching the first shutout of her career in a 3-0 victory over tournament-host Delaware State on Saturday. Gurrola gave up six hits and struck out three in the game. She again helped herself with the bat, driving in the first two runs of the game in the sixth inning for her first career game-winning hit. Gurrola worked out of jams in the last two innings, leaving the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth and then stranding two runners in the seventh inning. Gurrola suffered from some fielding miscues in her last game of the week as she surrendered nine runs (five earned) in 7.0 innings against tournament champion Binghamton on Sunday.
