Matta made three appearances, one as a starter and two as a reliever, during Mount St’ Mary’s five-game week. Pitching to a 1.08 earned-run average, Matta struck out five and walked only one over 8.1 innings. The veteran right-hander earned the save in both of the Mount’s victories over Norfolk State. With Mount St. Mary’s holding a 5-4 lead in the second game of Saturday’s doubleheader, Matta entered with one out in the final inning and proceeded to retire the fourth and fifth hitters in Norfolk’s lineup. He needed to work a bit longer in Sunday’s series finale, tossing 2.1 innings of three-hit ball to preserve a one-run lead in an eventual 7-5 victory. Prior to his 3.0 frames of shutout relief, Matta started the second of two games at Old Dominion. The 6-foot-1 Virginian surrendered seven hits and four runs (one earned) over 5.1 innings on his way to a no-decision.
