Diaz twirled 7.2 effective innings to win his collegiate debut at Virginia Commonwealth. The freshman right-hander scattered nine hits and allowed three runs to a Rams’ lineup that averaged 7.50 runs per game over the season’s first six contests. Diaz was on target from the start as he retired seven of the first eight batters he faced in the eventual 4-3 victory. Keeping a tough Colonial Athletic Association club at bay in his first career start, the 6-foot-1 Diaz fanned four while issuing only two free passes.
